🌊 Drowning Prevention Week 2026 🌊

As summer approaches, a simple conversation could make a big difference.

Try asking your child:

❓ Would you go near open water without an adult?
❓ What signs might tell you water is dangerous?
❓ What would you do if a friend dared you to jump in?
❓ What would you do if you fell in unexpectedly?
❓ Who would you call if someone else was in trouble?

The aim isn’t to scare children. It’s to help them recognise risks, make safer choices and know what to do if something goes wrong.

🌊 Drowning Prevention Week 2026 🌊

If someone gets into difficulty in the water, your first instinct may be to jump in and help.

❌ Don’t.

Many water rescue incidents result in multiple people getting into trouble.

Instead remember:

πŸ“ž Phone – Call 999
πŸ›Ÿ Float – Encourage them to float on their back
β• Throw – Throw something that floats if it is safe to do so
πŸ‘€ Wait – Keep talking to them and wait for emergency services

The most important thing is to keep yourself safe while getting help to the person in difficulty.

🌊 Drowning Prevention Week 2026 🌊

Water safety is one of the most important life skills a child can learn.

Today’s message is the Water Safety Code, four simple actions that can help keep children safe around water:

πŸ›‘ Stop and Think
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Stay Together
πŸ›Ÿ Float
πŸ“ž Call 999

Take a few minutes to talk through these with your child. Knowing what to do before an emergency happens can make all the difference.

This Friday and Saturday, 19th / 20th June, Aquanauts will be focusing on the RLSS Drowning Prevention Week during lessons.

Alongside swimming technique and confidence, we’ll be spending time talking to swimmers about water safety, how to stay calm, what to do if they get into difficulty, and why safe choices around water matter.

As we head into summer, it’s a good time for families to have those simple but important conversations too:
β€’ Do they know not to enter water without an adult?
β€’ Do they know what to do if they fall in?
β€’ Do they know how to float, call for help, and stay calm?
β€’ Do they understand that open water can be very different from a swimming pool?

We’ve put together a short parent information page with useful resources and a summary here:
https://www.swimaquanauts.co.uk/2026/drowning-prevention-week

Water safety is something every child should understand, not just during lessons, but whenever they are near water.
