Big changes are coming to GL1 Leisure Centre…

A major upgrade programme by Gloucester City Council and Freedom Leisure has begun - part of a wider £8 million investment by the council to improve leisure facilities across the city.

What’s coming?

✨ A brand-new gym and expanded fitness spaces, featuring EGYM equipment
✨ An enhanced soft play area and new water play features
✨ Refurbished changing rooms and an improved reception hub
✨ A refreshed women’s-only gym

…and lots more!

Design work has begun, with construction starting this September and the full transformation expected by autumn 2027.

GL1 will remain open throughout the works so you can continue to enjoy the facilities while improvements take shape.

📣CUSTOMER NOTICE📣

Please be aware that on Monday 22nd of June, our lane swimming in the morning will be reduced from 6am to 8am to allow essential surveying works to happen.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the works the pool will need to be closed. All other sessions in Barton will proceed as timetabled on this day.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding while these important works are carried out.

We have now almost completed Drowning Prevention Week 2026! We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our customers who have participated and all of our teachers who have continued to deliver important and life saving lessons! 💜

Before the week is over, pop to site to view our display to learn more about beach flags, the water safety code and to play spot the hazards at both the pool and the beach! 🏊‍♀️🏁

At Freedom Leisure Healthy Communities, we know that being out of work is about so much more than job applications and interviews.

Through Exercise Referral, wellbeing programmes, fitness classes, gym access, swimming, volunteering opportunities, work experience placements and simply becoming part of a supportive community, staying active can make a real difference to confidence, resilience and readiness for work.

Job seekers or those in receipt of benefits can enjoy a range of support options, and concessions may be available.

🌊WATER SAFETY WEEK🌊

Here at GL1 Leisure Centre, we are proudly supporting Drowning Prevention Week!
Our wonderful teachers Holly and Xav are showing four key beach flags that help to keep us safe! Do you know what they mean?

🚩Red Flag - Danger! No Swimming!
⛱️ Red and Yellow Flag - Lifeguarded Area - It is safe to swim between two of these flags!
🏁 Black and White Flag - Water Sports Only e.g., surfing, paddle boarding and kayaking!
🔶 Orange - Indicates offshore or strong winds!

You can help support Drowning Prevention Week by sharing such important messages with your child, your neighbour, your colleagues - anyone!

One step at a time, we can increase awareness and promote water safety! 🛟
