Why do we exercise ??

Invariably the answer always comes back the same...

To lose weight, look better and have bigger muscles etc.

But what else should we be considering ??
What factors do we overlook ??

Whilst exercising and eating well have the benefits of making us look and feel better about ourselves we also need to remember and consider the really important benefits (especially as we get older)...

✅ Muscle loss -
When we hit 40 we can lose as much as 1/2% of our muscle mass every year. This in turn makes us weaker and more prone to illness. Training to maintain muscle mass is imperative, ESPECIALLY after 40 !! Focus should be more on resistance training rather than just cardio.

️✅ Improved Proprioception - (Proprioception = "The bodies internal sense of position, movement and force"... the bodies 6th sense)... or, the bodies awareness of itself.

Having the ability to coordinate our bodies, to walk without falling over and to safely function through life with ease.

This may be as simple as putting your socks on without falling over !

️✅️ Flexibility and mobility -
(This ties in with Proprioception)...

Allowing our bodies to be able to move smoothly and correctly reduces the risk of injury or simply allows us to live our lives comfortably.

Being able to get out of bed or off a chair without aid... Being able to play with our kids or grandkids... Being able to enjoy hobbies and sports with ease and no pain.

✅️ Balance and Stability -
(Again very closely tied in with Proprioception)...

Having good balance is so important as we age. Being able to function safely without external forces impeding you.

This could be as simple as getting changed without falling over... walking on uneven ground... Playing safely with the grandkids.

✅️ Disease prevention -

Having a healthy, fit and strong body plays a huge part in reducing the effects of illness, speeding up recovery from illness and postponing or stopping age related diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis etc....

As well as heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers etc.

✅️ Increased energy and concentration -

Your body and brain will function at a much higher level when they are well maintained and cared for... We do it for our cars etc so why not make sure you keep your body serviceable.

Spend more money and time investing in yourself rather than inanimate things to improve your standard of living.

✅️ Better sleep -

Sleep is hugely important... a minimum of 7 hours a night aids in recovery, mental wellbeing, energy levels and mood.

Being fit and healthy plays a huge part in improving your sleep patterns.

✅ Stress reduction -

Fitter, healthier you equals reduced stress, better mood and more focus and energy to live your life on YOUR terms.

️
This list goes on and on...

Stop thinking about exercise and diet as a quick fix solution for your next holiday and start making it a part of your life.

The aesthetic side of it is a bonus... Being healthy, strong and mobile are the things we can't take for granted... ESPECIALLY as we age.

As I get ever closer to 50 my priorities and fitness / health goals have to change and adapt.

We all want to be 100% as fit and strong as we can be and in a perfect world we'd all stick to a rigid gym and diet routine... but life isn't perfect!!

Kids, work, DIY and injuries etc all get in the way and we have to find a way to adapt and maintain our health around these things.

I don't push myself as hard as I used to, I listen to my body more and understand the importance of rest and recovery.

I'm not looking to be the fittest in the gym or to be as strong as I used to be at 25... but maintaining muscle and bone density, taking care of my flexibility and mobility and eating healthily are as important now, if not more, than they've ever been.

My NON-NEGOTIABLES are fairly simple -

✅️ Protein at every meal.
✅️ 3 litres of water a day.
✅ 7+ hours sleep a night.
️✅️ 12500 average daily steps.
✅ A minimum of 3 strength, core and functional based workouts a week.
️✅ Cardio at least once a week.
️✅ 10 minutes of mobility and flexibility EVERY day.
️✅️ 85% rule on diet (85% healthy, 15% treats and rewards).

It's not always perfect, I don't always hit my targets 100%, but I keep a sensible, balanced consistency which will hopefully keep me moving and healthy for as long as possible.

Consistency is key... quick fixes, fad diets, rapid weight loss, excessive training etc may give short term results but nothing beats being consistent, creating routines and sticking at it... habit forming !!

Enjoy the finer things, have treats and night outs but make sure you stick to your routine and don't fall off the wagon.

Small, simple changes to your lifestyle will result in positive changes to your wellbeing which are maintainable... not a burden.

A fantastic morning's hike with some of the GMF crew today.
We usually go on our annual hiking weekend around this time of year but didn't manage to get a date sorted unfortunately... So we headed out for a hike instead.

12km around the Ladybower reservoir area...
Starting with the steep hike up Parkin Clough to Win Hill trig. We then headed back through the woods, crossing over the dam and headed to the other side of Ladybower. A nice hike up through woods to Rivelin sighting towers and then we turned back and headed across Bamford edge.

Lunch in the Yorkshire bridge inn to round things off. 😃

A beautiful morning, perfect hiking weather and great company. 🤩

Good morning guys.
Unfortunately I have to take my son to Tameside to have his plaster cast removed this morning.
Therefore the 9.15am class has to be cancelled. 🫣😕

I will be running an alternative class at 9.15am on Wednesday instead.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Simple lifestyle changes and choices = results !!

1. Consistency and habit... Results dont come over night and any diet or routine that claims fast results should be viewed with caution.
Become consistent, create good habits and the results will come. 🏋‍♂️🏃‍♀️🥵

2. Drink water. 💦

3. Eat Protein. 🥩

4. Lift weights. 💪

5. Work on balance, stability and flexibility. 🧘‍♂️

6. Eat enough calories. 🥩🥦🥑🥚🥗

7. Sleep. 😴

8. Get your daily steps.🚶‍♂️

9. Work hard, play hard. (Sensible balance to stop your fitness and diet goals becoming an un-maintainable slog). 🏋‍♀️🍏💃🍻

Fun family fitness morning at today.

It was all about colour and we managed 10 different games and races in just over an hour. 😍🥵

Relay races, Plank cone sort challenge, team hoop game, tug of war, cone grab tag and hungry Hippos to name a few. 🤩

Really enjoyed this one and was losing my voice by the end. 😝
