We are going up, say we are going up!! Huge win for the first team in one of the toughest places to go to in the league. This secured a second promotion in two years!!

It was always going to be a tight game, as Glenavy just edged the return fixture a few weeks back. We didn't exactly get off to an ideal start with an injury to Ben Thompson enforcing an early change, this to a squad that was already missing a few regulars due to various reasons. However Matty McConachie took to the field, for only his 2nd first team appearance, and he delivered a performance that epitomised Glenavy on the night - full of grit, determination and a relentless work-rate. A cagey first half saw chances for both sides, with heroic defending needed at times from the Glenavy rearguard. The first goal came just before half time, with a moment of almost expected quality at this stage, with Ross firing in another free kick to continue his excellent form.

Scarva equalised on the hour mark from a corner. The game then seemed to completely open up with chances appearing at both ends. Glenavy, unbelievably then found another gear, despite the gruelling schedule they have had to endure lately. Everyone was tracking their runners and busting a gut to support in attack. Lewis made a massive save to keep the score level with around 15 minutes left to go. Jack Gray and Connaire were combining well, with Stevie Stewart also looking more and more a threat as the game went on. The game was on a knife edge....Cometh the hour, cometh the man, as they say! Stevie Stewart delivered a beautiful cross after good work in the middle. He put the ball right into the danger zone, a place where big Al lives! And he was there to stretch out a leg to guide the ball home with only 5 minutes remaining. Fresh off his injury time winner last Saturday, Al just seems to be getting better and better. Glenavy defended well to see the game out and guarantee promotion back to division 1 next year.

Man of the match was tightly contested. Matty was excellent in an unfamiliar position and the defence all stood strong. But the quality and work that Jonny Wright and Ross Dougherty delivered was incredible. It was impossible to split them, so the management don't mind forking out for 2 pints at Lilys when they put in performances like that! Well done to all involved. Attention now turns to another tough fixture against Armagh Celtic on Saturday.

The Mid Ulster League Cup Final Thursday 30th April, Bourneview Mill will host this year’s decider, with a 7pm kick‑off, as St. Mary's YCFC U21 and Glenavy FC Reserves meet to battle for the trophy.

18 teams entered Round One, joined by seven sides receiving byes, while Banbridge Town U21 withdrew from the competition. What followed was a goal‑filled opening weekend that set the tone for the months ahead.

Dromara Village III edged past Lisburn Rovers Reserves 4–2, while Glenavy Reserves made a thunderous start with an 8–0 win over Donacloney Reserves. Gilford Crusaders Reserves travelled to Annalong and claimed a 6–2 victory, and Hill Street Reserves produced a 6–3 away win at Craigavon City III. Ballyoran Reserves defeated Rathfriland Rangers Swifts 3–1, Goodyear Reserves impressed with a 4–1 win over Moira Albion Reserves, and Valley Rangers Swifts swept aside Broomhedge Maghaberry Reserves 5–0. Lurgan Town III rounded out the round with a strong 6–1 win away to Magheralin Village Reserves. The only unplayed tie saw Derriaghy CC III paired with Banbridge Town U21, who had withdrawn.

Those early results fed into a competitive Round Two, where the field began to tighten. Dromara Village III continued their progress with a 2–1 win over Derriaghy CC III, while Goodyear Reserves edged Ballyvea Reserves 4–3. Lurgan Town III defeated Lurgan BBOB Reserves 3–1, and St Mary’s YC U21 announced themselves with a dominant 6–0 win away to Valley Rangers Swifts. Glenavy Reserves kept their momentum with a 2–0 victory over Ballymacash Rangers Swifts, and Ballyoran Reserves beat Gilford Crusaders Reserves 4–1. Lurgan Celtic Reserves’ tie with Craigavon City III did not proceed, and Castlecaulfield Reserves withdrew from their fixture with Lisburn Youth Reserves.

Round Three brought the competition into sharp focus. Lurgan Town III powered past Goodyear Reserves 5–1, while St Mary’s YC U21 edged Craigavon City III 3–2 to book their semi‑final place. Glenavy Reserves advanced automatically, and Dromara Village III progressed as Ballyoran Reserves withdrew.

That set up a compelling semi‑final double‑header on 18th April 2026. St Mary’s YC U21 travelled to Lurgan Town III and delivered a superb 4–1 win to reach the final. Glenavy Reserves faced Dromara Village III and secured a tight 1–0 victory to claim the second spot.

Goodyear 3 - 1 𝗚𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘃𝘆
⚽️ Alan Macdonald

A disappointing result for the first team in the league this week. The game was fairly even to begin with, but it was clear to see Goodyear were up for the battle, as they were still trying to secure safety in the league. Despite this Glenavy did carve out a few chances with good crosses coming in from Matt Lawlor and Stevie Stewart. However, it was Goodyear that broke the deadlock with what can only be described as a wonder goal, the Goodyear midfielder smashing the ball in from around 35 yards from, which caught everyone by suprise.

Glenavy started the second half much better and started to get on top, with Ross in particular pulling strings in the middle of the park. The equaliser came from some quick thinking from Jordy Anderson, finding Al in the box to tuck the ball away for his 25th goal of the season. At this stage it looked like Glenavy would press their advantage to win the game but unfortunately they got caught out with a sucker punch. A missed clearance led to Goodyear breaking 3 against 1. W***y did fantastically to get across and block the shot, however the ball seemed to spin off his shin into the top corner of the Glenavy net.

Glenavy then lost their discipline and stopped playing the football that got them back into the game, whilst still creating a few chances to grab a goal back. Goodyear defended well and a red card to Glenavy made the task even more difficult. With Glenavy still chasing the game Goodyear exploited the gaps and added a third after a poor clearance from Glenavy.

A disappointing afternoon for Glenavy with avoidable goals costing us on the day. Although the squad was stretched due to various reasons, this should not be seen as an excuse, as the team on the field were more than good enough to win the game. An improved performance is required from the squad and returning players next week to maintain our league challenge. Congratulations to Goodyear, if they maintain that performance they will undoubtedly climb the league table by the end of the season.

A difficult afternoon for the 2nds on Saturday facing title/promotion chasing Killymoon however the lads put in a battling performance. Twice Glenavy led with both goals from Mick McCarthy but unfortunately couldn't hold on for the result. All focus quickly shifts to the cup final on Thursday night against St Mary's.

5 wins on the bounce puts Glenavy back on top of the league! After having so many league games postponed due to bad weather or cup commitments it left us with a lot of games to catch up on. A good run of form has thankfully changed those games in hand to points on the board.

Glenavy started right where they left off after their last game against Red Star. Bright and patient football led to an early goal. It came after great work down the left from Matt Lawlor, riding a few tackles to then pull the ball back for big Al, who made no mistake. The second goal quickly followed, it also came after some excellent work out wide. This time it was Stevie Stewart who delivered an inch perfect cross, which Al expertly nodded home.

Glenavy were in complete control at this stage, with the influential Mark Mccullough playing in a deeper role and dictating the play. Stevie was next to get on the scoresheet after good work from Jordy Anderson. Jordy then showed some brilliant skill to beat the Donacloney full back, only to be brought down from behind for a penalty. Jordy gave the ball to Al for the chance for big Al to get his hat-trick. What followed was quite a bizarre decision from the referee. With both players encroaching the box, Big Al slotted the ball past the keeper. As the Glenavy players were celebrating, the next thing they knew the Donacloney players had the ball and were rushing towards the Glenavy net. The ref had given a free kick to Donacloney due to players encroaching, much to the amazement of everyone in attendance. To add to the frustration Donacloney then pulled a goal back. However, big Al didn't have to wait long until his hattrick came. A stevie shot rebounded off the crossbar, and as he always is, Al was on hand to prod the ball home.

Glenavy were probably a little guilty of taking their foot off the pedal at times during the match in between good spells, but this is to be expected after such a congested run of fixtures. Credit should also go to Donacloney, a young side with some good players, they never stopped working for the whole game. The firsts will get a few days rest now until we travel to Lurgan to play Goodyear with a chance to extend our lead at the top of the table.

𝗚𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 0 - 0 Rectory Rangers Reserves

The reserves may have been suffering a hangover from their successful semi final on Saturday, this led to quite a flat performance. However there were a few positives for the management, as they got to look at a few players from the 3rd team squad as everyone is fighting for a place in the cup final squad!
