On Wednesday one of our Baliffs was fishing on Peg 20 at Burtle and located these beer cans that had been thrown in the hedge by the side of the peg by a member.

A lot of time and effort from just a handful of volunteers goes into keeping the lakes in the best possible condition for everyone to enjoy. This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and disrespectful to the effort made by those handful of volunteers.

The committee’s stance is clear on the expected standards and behaviour we expect of our members. If any member is found breaking rules, causing anti-social behaviour, disrespecting our lakes or leaving litter behind there will be consequences and the removal of your right to fish any of our waters.

Respect the lakes, leave no trace.

If you witness any such behaviour please report it to us in confidence via messenger.

G.M.A.A Spring Series Final Round – Burtle Lakes

The final round of the G.M.A.A Spring Series, sponsored by Tom Thick Baits, was held on the Front and Back Lakes at Burtle on Sunday.

A total of 10 anglers took part, braving wall-to-wall sunshine and high temperatures. Going into the final round, everything was still to play for, with the top four standings as follows:

Steve Whatley – 41 points
Nick Talbot – 37 points
Jack Jarvis – 30 points
Neil Prettejohn – 30 points

With anglers able to drop their worst result from one of the four matches, the overall title was still very much up for grabs.

There was plenty of speculation beforehand as to how the hot weather would affect the fishing, whether it would switch the fish on or completely shut them down.

At the ‘all-in’, it quickly became apparent for most that it was going to be a tough day. The usual steady run of early bites failed to materialise, and as the morning mist burnt away, giving way to bright blue skies, bites became even harder to come by.

In difficult conditions, it was the anglers who worked their swims the hardest who found success.

Liam Smith drew Peg 1 and put together a composed performance, catching steadily on the whip early on before targeting shaded margins. He built a solid weight early, which proved vital as bites slowed later. Liam finished with 8lb 11oz, enough to take the match win.

Jerry Miller, on unfancied Peg 49, made an excellent start on the whip near a bed of lily pads. As conditions changed, Jerry used his watercraft to follow the fish into open water, catching quality rudd and roach shallow on the waggler over maggots while others struggled. His 5lb 7oz secured second place.

Jim Gray fished the whip on Peg 7, putting together a respectable mixed net of roach and rudd weighing 4lb 0oz, earning him third place on the day.

As the match wore on, bites all but disappeared, with some anglers failing to catch in the final few hours. It became a real test of patience in the heat, scratching around for increasingly reluctant fish.

At the end of the match, anglers gathered in the car park, comparing questionable sun tans and eagerly awaiting the final series standings before heading to The Railway Inn for some well-earned refreshments.

G.M.A.A Spring Series – Round 3 Match Report
Sunday 17th May – Carp Lake, Burtle

Round 3 of the G.M.A.A Spring Series took place on Sunday 17th May at Carp Lake, Burtle, with 14 anglers in attendance. Following the excellent sport in Round 1, expectations were high for another competitive match with the potential for some impressive weights.

However, the main talking point of the day proved to be the weather. Forecasts of thundery showers materialised, and anglers had to contend with heavy downpours and blustery conditions throughout the match, which made for challenging fishing at times.

With only nine pegs offering a chuck to the island, the draw was always going to be crucial in determining anglers’ fortunes, particularly for those targeting the lake’s larger carp.

The standout performance of the day came from series sponsor Tom Thick of Tom Thick Baits, who drew peg 21. Tom enjoyed an exceptional session, fishing a pellet waggler tight to the island. He made a flying start, landing four carp within the first hour, including a stunning mirror carp weighing 25lb 14oz (weighed and released).

Continuing with the pellet waggler approach, Tom went on to land eight carp in total, including fish of 21lb 12oz, 17lb 6oz, and 13lb 9oz (weighed and released). His final weight of 118lb 10oz secured a convincing victory and also set a new club record for Burtle, with an impressive average fish weight of over 14lb.

Steve Smith, drawn on peg 31, also began on the pellet waggler but found bites hard to come by. A late switch to a slow-sinking bomb proved worthwhile, resulting in two carp for a total of 17lb 8oz, enough to secure second place.

Steve Whatley, fishing from peg 19 (the same peg he won from in the previous match), opted for a similar tactic, targeting the island with a slow-sinking bomb. After catching an early carp, bites proved elusive, and despite losing a couple of fish, Steve managed to land a second carp to finish with 16lb 6oz and take third place.

With limited island access on some pegs, Nick Talbot, drawn on peg 40, focused on the silvers competition using a whip. His mixed net of roach and rudd weighed 6lb 6oz, which was enough to win the silvers section. With John Aldam having managed to tempt one of the lovely bream in the lake which weighed 5lb 8oz.

A notable moment during the match involved Paul Davis on peg 20, who hooked a carp that had become tethered to the island on discarded tackle. Demonstrating great sportsmanship, Paul paused his match, retrieved a boat, and successfully freed the fish before resuming fishing.

For many of the remaining anglers, it proved to be a difficult day, with only a handful managing to land a single fish in the challenging conditions.

G.M.A.A Spring Series – Round 2 Match Report

Burtle Front & Back Lakes – Sunday 9th May

Round 2 of the G.M.A.A Spring Series took place at Burtle, with 13 anglers competing across both the Front and Back Lakes.

The main target species were Roach, Rudd, and Perch, with the possibility of bonus Bream or Tench making a difference to the final standings.

Match Overview

The dominant tactic on the day was the traditional whip, where speed fishing proved key to building a competitive weight of small Roach and Rudd. The most productive approach was fishing up in the water, as the cold lakebed conditions meant fish were reluctant to feed on the bottom.

A handful of anglers opted for a different approach, setting up long pole and feeder lines in search of larger bonus fish. However, these tactics carried more risk in what were tricky conditions.

The weather remained dry throughout, but a moderate breeze made presentation challenging at times, especially for those fishing the lighter whip setups.

Notable Performances

Nick Talbot (Peg 51, Back Lake)
Drawing into the wind-blown corner, Nick made an excellent start. Fishing the whip up in the water with sloppy groundbait and maggots, he built a strong early net of fish and maintained his rhythm throughout. His consistent approach secured a convincing victory.

Jack Jarvis (Peg 13 Front Lake)
Jack started on a pole and feeder line in open water before switching tactics. Moving under an overhanging tree proved decisive, allowing him to steadily accumulate a quality net of Roach and Rudd to claim second place.

Liam Smith (Back Lake)
Liam fished a dual approach, targeting smaller fish shallow on the whip and a pole line over maggots on the deck. He hooked into a crucial bonus Bream, but unfortunately lost it in w**d near the net, an incident that ultimately cost him a higher finish.

Steve Whatley (Peg 5, Front Lake)
With favourable conditions and the wind off his back, Steve made a strong start, catching over 60 fish in the first 90 minutes. However, bites slowed considerably as the match progressed, making it difficult to maintain his early pace.

Robbie Birch (Back Lake)
Targeting bigger fish, Robbie endured a slower match but was rewarded with some quality Perch and a bonus Eel over 1lb, helping him secure his section.

A few hours of essential maintenance down at Burtle lakes this morning by committee members Tony, Steve and Jamie. Pegs on all three lakes mowed and a number of swims strimmed back and Reed’s cleared. Keeping the lakes looking fantastic.
