A professional knife sharpener once told me

'little and often'

was the best way to look after a field knife.

A pocket sharpener like this DC3 is enough to keep a good working edge on most knives that I use.

For jungle machetes and my infamous 'Tracker' knife - I would bring something a bit bigger.

The method I use the most is

10 swipes of the sharpener for each side of the blade

followed by 5, then 3, then a few alternating swipes to finish off.

This is usually enough to keep most blades sharp enough to be useful. A dull blade is dangerous, as it requires a lot of pressure to make cuts. Right before it slips in the wrong direction...

The priority of the first 4 will change on an hourly or daily basis, with the modifiers usually being activated suddenly as required.

Navigation is really the only one that will filter in and out of the day. 10% when you just need to keep on track (an obvious path on a clear day) or 100% in white out conditions.

The scale of these trees is immense.

Tropical rainforest giants can reach 50m - 60m tall. This one could easily be 300 years old or more.

The Tarp worked quite well - until it got damaged on the rock along with the dry-bags holding it down.

It was worth a try, but next time the group shelter will be in the form of a big survival bag / bothy.

Survival fishing kit - with a light rock fishing (LRF) twist.

The 'isome' worms are a Japanese brand of 'soft plastic' fishing lures, and bagged up in a scent solution.

The little soft plastic fish is a Berkley 'power sardine'!

The tiny sewing machine bobbins hold around 10m of line, which means this kit is best suited for hand-lining off a drop off. More line could be carried separately for a negligible weight penalty.

A small float and mini cyalume to be added to this set up later on, for more trials.

Aggressive katabatic winds rolled off the hilltop and smashed straight into the side of the tent as the temperature dropped overnight.

Normally the side of the tent is its weakest point, but this little fortress held fast.
