Inverness to Bergen Race Recap 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿➡️🇳🇴
This year’s Inverness to Bergen race delivered some intense sailing and a well-deserved victory for Reindeer!
With a daunting forecast of strong winds looming off Norway, the Race Committee made the call to move the start up by 12 hours. A late Thursday evening start saw the fleet flying down the Moray coast under spinnakers before settling in for the long North Sea crossing.

In Their Own Words...
The Crew on Reindeer:
"Friday was mostly spent under spinnaker in lovely conditions... With heavy weather in the offing, we were pleased that the Race Committee finished the race at the gate. As soon as we were through, the breeze began to build to 25 knots with a nasty cross sea! A fine sail for us, and delighted to find another Offshore Event in the Scottish calendar."
15-year-old Reindeer crew member, Orla Fergusson, was flying high after the victory:
"It was another great sail. Loads to see on the way here. Now buzzing for the race to Shetland!"

The Crew on Swiftwing:
"We had great sailing till around midnight on Friday when the wind dropped, then disappeared altogether... Sailed the last few hours under jib alone up to Hjellestad and arrived after about 50 hours from Inverness Marina. A good sail and now wonderful weather here! 🌞"

Huge congratulations to the crew of Reindeer on an incredible race, and a massive well done to the other yachts that took part. Now, time to enjoy the beautiful Norwegian sunshine before the next leg to Shetland! 🏁

Best of luck to the three yachts and their crew which are setting off across the North Sea on the Clyde Cruising Club’s Blue Water Challenge.

This is a feeder race for the 40th Anniversary Bergen to Shetland Race which starts on June 17th. The 323 nautical miles Blue Water Challenge starts off in Inverness on Friday 12th June, before they return on the 190 miles race to Shetland which honours World War 2’s Shetland Bus which used fishing boats to carry resistance fighters and supplies between occupied Norway and the UK.

The experienced crews of James Anderson’s Lerwick based Arcona 410 Swiftwing, Jack Meredith’s well-travelled S&S Swan 43 Reindeer and Angus Cartwright’s Beneteau First 47.7 Golden Fox are all looking forward to a challenging passage across the North Sea. Reindeer and Swiftwing have both competed on the Shetland Race before whilst Golden Fox cruised to Bergen two years ago.

The Blue Water Challenge is the Clyde Cruising Club’s longest offshore race and the club are intent on strengthening its appeal, already planning for the next edition in 2028.

You can keep track of the yachts online through Yellow Brick Tracker.

Wreck Bay Gathering - A Wonderful Day Afloat ⛵

Around 30 members and friends gathered at Wreck Bay on Saturday for a fantastic day enjoying good company, great conversation and a shared love of being on the water.

Some crews were making the most of their summer holidays, others were out for the weekend, while a few took the opportunity to visit and admire the beautiful Fife yachts nearby. Ashore, the BBQ provided the perfect excuse to catch up with old friends and welcome new faces, with the Kyles Rowers also stopping by to add to the atmosphere.

It was particularly encouraging to meet crews from several boats joining us for the first time, and wonderful to see six boats stay overnight to enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Kyles.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such an enjoyable gathering. Events like this remind us that some of the best days afloat are simply about spending time together.

In the main outer part of Loch Skipport, South Uist, there are two abandoned mussel ropes, with no buoys on them, running E-W in approx position:

N57°19.8
W007°14.7

These long ropes now have no flotation buoys to support them, are heavily covered in w**d, and are not at all obvious. The ropes are about 20-30m apart, and were spotted by a member sailing along between them.
