My Story - Robert Downs
In the UK 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Unfortunately, I am one of those statistics. Earlier this year, after a PSA test, MRI and biopsy I was told I had prostate cancer. I've been very lucky - I underwent surgery quickly and I am now cancer free.
While my experience could've been a lot worse the physical and mental toll of the last few months has been intense. Charities like Prostate Cancer UK are invaluable to supporting men and their families through their treatment and the aftermath and that's why I'm taking part in the The Big Golf Race to help raise funds for vital research.
My cancer was detected early and there is no doubt that has been a huge contributing factor to my recovery. There is no national screening programme so getting a PSA test is a must!
On Friday 26 June, me, Stuart McAffrey, Kris Jamieson, Steven Black, David Devine, Andy Park, Kieran Downs, Alan Jones, Davie Scott, Andy Park Jnr, Jonathan Gibson and Derek Clarke will be undertaking 72 holes of golf - four rounds in one day all to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
Every pound raised helps fund vital prostate cancer research that could lead to earlier diagnosis and a future where men’s lives aren’t left to chance. Any donations are very gratefully received.
I am delighted and proud to say we have the backing from Cowglen, Pollok and Whitecraigs Golf Clubs and for that I am so grateful.
First round - 4.30am Whitecraigs
Second round - 9.00 Pollok
Third round - 13.30 Cowglen
Fourth round - 18.00 Cowglen
