Our Club Handicap Championship Finals Day are underway with 5 finals being played.

Due to a couple of the finalists reaching multiple finals the Ward Salver ( Gent's 4 ball Championship) had already been played and the Pickwell Trophy (Gent's 50 +) and the Mrs.
The Andrew McCallum Trophy ( Ladies Foursomes) are being played at later dates.

Following the devastating news this week I can confirm the funeral arrangements for William Smith.

Willie’s funeral will take place at Linn Crematorium on Wed 16th September 2026 at 2pm.

Thereafter there is a reception at the Torrance Hotel in East Kilbride.

There will also be a video link available for those who wish to join on-line.

His wife Lynsey has requested that there are no black clothes, as it is too formal, and not reflective of Willie’s personality.

It is with immeasurable sadness and great difficulty to write that William Smith, our beloved Assistant Professional and admin assistant passed away peacefully yesterday morning (8/9/26) at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.
His wife Lynsey was by his side.

Many of you will know that Willie had been battling against an aggressive form of cancer for the last couple of years. He fought valiantly through all the different treatments. He did so with immense dignity, strength and courage.
He was only 48.

Willie started working at Cowglen in 1999 as a young man, and became my assistant in 2000, when I took over as professional. His natural enthusiasm and good humour would often be the first face that members and guests would see when arriving at the club.

An outstanding junior member at Williamwood, winning the junior championship and representing the club in both the Fleming Watson and Brand Putter leagues he initially embarked on a degree at University before deciding on a career in golf.

Incredibly competitive, he frustrated many ( including myself) with his ability to play excellent golf despite not picking up a club for lengthy periods.

His devotion to Cowglen has been total and his contribution immeasurable and he has been instrumental in numerous key decisions over the years.

Personally, I couldn't have wished for a better confidant or trusted friend.

His wife Lynsey never left his side since last Tuesday afternoon when he was taken to hospital and he was constantly surrounded by their families and friends.

Our love and our thoughts are with them all on such a sad day, as well as his two dogs who meant so much to him.

The club flag will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Today I would ask that you hold Willie in your thoughts.

The club handicap championship finals are scheduled to take place on Sunday the 13th of September.

Congratulations to all the finalists on reaching the respective Finals.

The Ladies finals between Kate O'Donnell & Ruth Anderson ( Lady Stirling Maxwell Trophy) is scheduled to take place on Monday the 7th.

The date for the Secetary's Cup Final between Eimear Gordon/Graeme Ralph & Sue Fordyce/Ian Fordyce is tbc as are the finalists for the Junior handicap Championship

Spectators are more than welcome.

Each year, the Club has the opportunity to present the Jack Murray Trophy to a member, or members, who have made a significant contribution to the Club or brought recognition to it throughout the year.

This can be through their playing or representative achievements, or through their involvement and contribution in other areas of our sport. It is a discretionary award decided upon by the Council, and this year’s decision was unanimous.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2026 Jack Murray Trophy is Calum Morrison.

Calum, our current Junior Champion having retained his title this year following his victory in 2025, has represented the Club across the country throughout 2026.

Among his many highlights were winning the Glasgow Boys Strokeplay and finishing runner-up in the West of Scotland Boys Championship as well a scoring the lowest gross score in our own Campbell McMillan Trophy.

He also qualified for the match-play stages of the Scottish Boys Championship, broke through to play for the Brand Putter team, and reached the final of the Men’s Club Championship, eventually losing on the 35th hole.

We are announcing the award a little earlier than usual for a very good reason. Calum has now headed stateside to take up his golf scholarship at Bellevue University, Nebraska, where he will join the University Golf Team.

We look forward to following his progress and hearing all about this exciting new chapter in his golfing life.

In addition to the trophy, we have given Calum some Cowglen-branded items, ensuring that he will always have a little piece of Cowglen with him and can help to “spread the word” about our wonderful course.

We will have the opportunity to formally present the trophy to Calum’s family at the Club Prizegiving in November.

I hope you will all agree that this is a thoroughly well-deserved award for a young man who is a credit to both his family and our Golf Club.

Congratulations, Calum, and best wishes for the exciting journey ahead.

🏌️🏌️‍♀️2026 Junior Open 🏌️‍♀️🏌️
We held our annual Junior Open yesterday, we hosted 32 players.
There was some great golf played in very blustery and sometimes wet conditions.
The winner was Jayden Kinnear from Cathcart Castle GC who had an incredible net 63 (75 -12) just pipping Murray Harkess from Whitecraigs GC by one shot (85 -21)
Will Sutherland had the best scratch score of 74.
Congratulations to all prize winners and thank you to all players for supporting our event.
We look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

After the summer break it's the turn of one of our most popular acts, "Just John and Paul", who will entertain us with their excellent tribute to the songs of Lennon & McCartney and The Beatles on Saturday 5th September.

If you've seen this act before you will know you won't want to miss out. If you haven't seen them then we can promise you a real treat.
