Women on Wheels Hub

Women on Wheels Hub Women on Wheels (SCIO) is a community cycling hub for women. The world of everyday cycling is dominated by a white male demographic.

A service designed and led by women, we deliver a range of cycling activities to get women back on a bike or onto a bike for the very first time. It is much less common for women to cycling for transport and leisure, especially women of colour. Our mission is to empower and enable women to overcome their barriers to take up cycling - for transport, to improve their physical and mental health, and most importantly, for the pure joy of it! If you find yourself in that in between stage, where you know how to ride a bike but lack confidence to fully enjoy riding, our Confidence Building Cycling Skills Sessions are designed just for you. We practice in traffic free areas and get comfortable with small hills, gears, turns (also those that are a little tighter) and everything in between. It’s a friendly, supportive environment for women and non-binary folks aged 16+. Our next session is this Saturday 12-1.30pm. Head to the link in our bio to book your place 🔗🚴‍♀️

When plan A doesn't work out 🌧🚵‍♀️

Last Wednesday the plan had been to head to Pollok Park for some awesome mountain biking. However, with the weather being far from favourable we opted for a trip to Queens Park instead.

We started practicing skills to get comfortable with the bikes before trying out some of the muddy trails. All of the group did amazing and tackled some tricky downhill sections. Half the group even tried a long downhill section from the flagpole which was exhilarating!

It was one of those evenings where you could easily have curled up inside, but we went out and had a tonne of fun instead. Never let the weather hold you back! (Unless it's actually dangerous out there in which case please do!) Well done to everyone who came along - you smashed it!

If you would also like to give mountain biking a go, we've got a day trip to Balfron coming up on Sunday 4 October, 9am-4pm. It's a coached session perfect for beginners and intermediates. You learn all the basics before practicing skills and drills and cycling around some truly stunning trails. It's such a fun day out!

If you fancy coming along, head to Plinth to book: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/IFZQVutMfvUZrgEhIRkW

When you don't know how to ride a bike how are you supposed to teach your child?

This is a scenario many - mums in particular - face. Sadly, Bikeability in school doesn't support kids who don't already know how to ride a bike - that's where our families programme can support you instead.

Learn more about how Anna learnt how to cycle and inspired her mum Fiona to learn too 👇

We offer the following sessions to support you:

Kids cycling lessons (girls and non-binary kids), Saturdays 9.30-10.30am.
Suitable for girls and non-binary kids aged 5-12 years of age who would either like to learn to ride a bike or build their confidence cycling. It's a super friendly and nurturing environment. Book one or more sessions to fit around kids birthday parties and other commitments. The session starts at our Hub in Govanhill.

Family cycling sessions, Saturdays 10.45-11.45am and 3.30-4.30pm. These sessions are bespoke to your family only. Whether you or your children are learning to ride or you want to build your confidence cycling with your kids (including with child carrying equipment) we can help you. The sessions are suitable for mums/carers and their kids (girls and non-binary kids of all ages, boys up to 12). Book one or more sessions. The session starts at our Hub in Govanhill.

We also host a balance bike group on Thursday mornings 10-11am in Queens Park. It's perfect to help the littlest ones get started on bikes. Suitable for all children who can confidently walk aged 1-5.

If you have any questions about our families programme, please email Katherine on [email protected].

All sessions can be booked on our website: https://womenonwheels.org.uk/family-cycling

This is your chance to get up close and personal with bikes and learn how to build a bike from scratch 🔧🚲

Ideal for those who:
🌍 Fancy travelling further afield with their bikes (perhaps even on a flight!) and don't want to get stranded either at the airport trying to put their bike safely back together or worse in the middle of nowhere with no reception or signal.
💷Want to save money on trips to the mechanics (or have the confidence to explain exactly what part needs replacing)
🤓Like to know the ins and outs of how a bike works and functions
🚲 Aspires to build their own unique and awesome bike (and don't want the hassle and cost of making some expensive mistakes while learning)

At our Intermediate Bike Maintenance Course led by the brilliant Mhairi we'll strip back the bikes (don't worry, not yours - ours!) and over the 4-weeks we'll learn how to put them back together. You'll learn where all the various bits and bobs go and what they do.

The course runs over four Sundays in October: 4/10, 11/10, 18/10 and 25/10 from 3-5.30pm. You must be able to attend all sessions to take part in the course. The full course is pay as you can £140-200 (£35-50 per session).

Cycling programme on Fridays for those who can cycle but lack confidence 🚴‍♀️

This is a fabulous opportunity for those who already know how to ride a bike, but are feeling wobbly, lacking confidence or want to work on specific skills.

The block will be tailored to the small group of participants so everyone gets the most out of the sessions. However, the rough plan for the sessions is as follows:

🔸 Week 1 - Off road cycle skills in nearby park - getting on and off the bike safely, signalling, turning, braking, gears and looking over your shoulder whilst cycling

🔸Week 2 - Cycling skills in practice - using quiet residential streets we will practice gears, signalling, cycling with others and where to cycle on the roads

🔸Week 3 - Cycling skills in practice - using quiet roads we will progress previously learnt skills and look at rules of the road and how to cycle on very quiet roads/in low traffic

The cycling skills and confidence block is open to women and non-binary folks aged 16+ and the whole block is pay as you can £30-75 (£10-25 per session). Please note there is a one week gap between week 2 and 3 due to September weekend.

As spaces are limited we recommend booking as soon as you can via Plinth: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/ZSoHLdMGm2qdNI5G3yLl
