Been a while since we have done any match reports so thanks to Freya for keeping track of the game and hassling me to post one.
Kyleakin 3–2 Gairloch
GF MacRae Cup – Quarter Final
Kyleakin progressed to the next round of the GF MacRae Cup after a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Gairloch in challenging, windy conditions.
The match began with both sides adjusting to the blustery weather, but Kyleakin took an early lead in unusual fashion. A defensive mix-up saw Sean Campbell’s sliding challenge lead to a misplaced pass back, and with the Gairloch goalkeeper missing his clearance, the ball rolled into the net for an own goal to make it 1–0.
Kyleakin doubled their advantage shortly after, with Aaron Macbeth putting the keeper under pressure and forcing the ball into the net to put the home side 2–0 up within the opening stages.
Gairloch responded well, pulling a goal back with around 25 minutes remaining in the first half to make it 2–1. The momentum continued to swing their way when they were awarded a penalty 15 minutes before the break, which they converted to level the score at 2–2. They nearly went ahead moments later, but a well-struck free kick from just outside the box was superbly saved by the Kyleakin goalkeeper.
Half-time: 2–2
The second half proved to be a tighter and more cautious affair, with chances limited for both sides. The decisive moment came around 15 minutes in when Kyleakin were awarded a penalty following a challenge from the Gairloch goalkeeper on forward Archie Gillies. Aaron Macbeth stepped up and calmly slotted home his second of the match to restore Kyleakin’s lead at 3–2.
Despite late pressure from Gairloch, Kyleakin held firm defensively to see out the game and secure their place in the next round.
Full-time: Kyleakin 3–2 Gairloch
Credit to Gairloch who battled hard all day and would be a great to see them back in the league.
