🏌️ What Is Bounce on a Wedge?

Ever wondered what the bounce on your wedge actually does? It could make a bigger difference to your short game than you think!

Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole of your wedge. In simple terms, it helps the club glide through the turf or sand rather than digging in.

⛳ Why is it important?

🔹 Less digging: More bounce can help stop the leading edge digging too deeply into the ground, especially on softer turf and in bunkers.
🔹 Better bunker shots: Bounce helps the club move through the sand, making it easier to splash the ball out.
🔹 Different lies, different needs: Lower bounce can be useful on firmer ground and for players who deliver the club with a shallower angle. Higher bounce often suits softer conditions and steeper swings.
🔹 More confidence around the greens: Choosing the right bounce for your technique and the conditions can help you strike more consistent chips and pitches.

There’s no single bounce option that works for everyone. Your swing, technique and the conditions all play a part.

Smash Factor: What does it actually mean?

You’ll often hear golfers and coaches talk about smash factor when looking at launch monitor data — but what exactly is it?

Simply put, smash factor measures how efficiently you transfer energy from the clubhead into the golf ball.

It’s calculated by dividing ball speed by clubhead speed.

For example, if your driver clubhead speed is 100mph and your ball speed is 145mph, your smash factor is 1.45.

A higher smash factor generally means you’re getting more ball speed from the same amount of clubhead speed — often a sign of a more efficient strike.

But it’s not simply about trying to chase the highest number possible. Strike quality, impact location, launch, spin and delivery all work together to determine how efficiently you hit the ball.

That’s why launch monitor data can be so useful: it helps us understand why you’re getting the results you are, rather than just looking at how far the ball went.
