β€οΈ HOW TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF DIABETES & HEART DISEASE β€οΈ
The good news is that there are lifestyle changes you can make every day to help reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
πββοΈ 1. KEEP ACTIVE
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. Walking, swimming, cycling and gym sessions can all help improve heart health and insulin sensitivity.
π₯ 2. EAT A BALANCED DIET
Base your meals around vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, lean proteins, beans and pulses. Try to reduce your intake of highly processed foods, added sugars and excessive saturated fat.
βοΈ 3. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
If you're overweight, even a modest reduction in body weight can improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
πͺ 4. BUILD MUSCLE
Resistance training 2β3 times per week can help improve insulin sensitivity, maintain muscle mass and support a healthy metabolism.
πΆ 5. MOVE MORE DURING THE DAY
You don't have to spend all day in the gym. Regular walking and breaking up long periods of sitting can make a difference.
π 6. DON'T SMOKE
Smoking significantly increases your risk of cardiovascular disease. Stopping is one of the best things you can do for your heart.
πΊ 7. KEEP ALCOHOL MODERATE
Regularly drinking too much alcohol can contribute to weight gain, high blood pressure and other health problems.
π΄ 8. PRIORITISE SLEEP
Aim for around 7β9 hours of good-quality sleep each night. Poor sleep can affect appetite, weight management and blood sugar control.
π©Ί 9. KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Regularly check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, particularly if you have risk factors or a family history of diabetes or heart disease.
β€οΈ 10. START BEFORE THERE'S A PROBLEM
You don't need to wait until you're diagnosed with something to make a change. Your daily habits can have a major impact on your long-term health.
Small changes. Consistent habits. Better health.
