It was the old folks day yesterday at Gairloch - or Seniors as we probably prefer to be known. Five folks braved the calm, sunny, nearly midge free conditions. A perfect morning for golf. Well it was for Robbie Taylor, blazing round in 40 points, despite claiming that he had about 45 putts in his round. Its perhaps just as well that he had that many putts as otherwise I might have been cutting him by more than four shots...Anne was second and George was third. Mark LJ and Paul H shared the prize for best use of the golf course. Their scores don't really merit me saying that they were equal fourth. The good news is that their society handicaps have each gone up by one. The other good news is that when Robbie saw how much loose change was in his winners purse he refused to accept it and instead bought the five of us a drink. A worthy winner....

The picture is from last year. Young George putting out on the third and I think its Rhona on the first.

The Seniors Open this Friday coming has been mentioned a few times. What we haven't said is that we are playing for the Harry Davis Memorial Trophies. Harry is a legendary figure. Despite spending two years in hospital after being injured in the Korean War he fought back to play 272 times for Rangers, winning 7 trophies with them. He ended his days in Gairloch and I'm fairly sure there could be a multitude of stories told about his time here. I think it adds to the atmosphere of the day if you're playing for a trophy with the name Harold Davis on it. I said earlier that he is a legendary figure. I purposefully didn't use the past tense. Competitions like this keep folk like Harry (and all his achievements) alive. So come on folks, get your names down. There are a few well known locals missing off that starting sheet. So come on down, have a game of golf in good company, and raise a glass afterwards to Harry. He deserves it.

Wandering down towards the 6th green yesterday morning. A sailboat coming into the bay in the distance. Further right, just out of shot, I could see Clisham, the highest point on Harris. Who needs the Mediterranean or the Caribbean when you have blue skies and views like this. The course itself is in beautiful condition thanks to Marks hard work, not forgetting the help from George and Nick.

I'll not mention the fact that I was still wearing three layers when I took this.

The course lit by bright sunshine. Blue skies overhead. Not today then. It was the big Summer competition today. Played in bits of rain, strong winds and temperatures so low that Phil Wilson was wearing four layers and resembled the Michelin Man. But there were some excellent scores despite that. The Club Cup was won by Mark Dodd with an excellent gross score of 67. Very few mistakes in an extremely steady round. He'll play off for the Club Championship against the reigning champion, Neil Macleod, who played superbly over the last twelve holes (with three birdies on the back nine) to pip Brian Grant on a card play off for the chance to play Mark in the final. Not that Brian should be too disappointed because his net score of 64 in poor conditions was good enough to win the Kirk Cup. He'll play off for the Ian Campbell Cup against Stuart Hasyn who beat Phil Wilson in a card play off to get the other final berth.

Are you a senior golfer? Have you reached an age where none of your limbs take any notice of your brain anymore. That's the stage I'm at. The wee men in the mission control section of my mind are still there. They know the script. They know what all the various arms, legs, wrists etc are supposed to do. But the instant I try and hit a golf ball I might as well be Ken Dodd with a tickling stick. Limbs fly about in all directions. And the ball does the same. If indeed it does move at all. I’m reminded of that great quote by David Feherty when he was commenting on Jim Furyk. David described Jims swing as being akin to an octopus falling out of a tree. But. At 63 years young I'm still loving it. And we've got a proper competition for the rest of you oldies that love it. The Gairloch Seniors Open on the 19th of June. Get your names down. The video is one of me turning into my Dad. I always joked that he could make a full swing in a phone box
