GF Macrae Cup Quarter Final
Kyleakin 3 G/A 2.
Our young squad took the trip down to Skye to play Kyleakin in which turned out to be a well contested match in blustery conditions.
G/A started the better team with a good spell of possession before conceding early from a defensive mixup at the back, a back pass from Ross Lister rolled through to Ali Pickering with the ball bobbling over his foot and into the net. 1-0 Kyleakin
Kyleakin soon doubled their advantage after their forward capitalised on a bit of defensive pinball and a clearance smashed off their forward and into our net. 2-0 Kyleakin
G/A settled into the game after this and started to play some good football, a lovely ball over the top by Eoin Cu***ng was met by Corey Maclennan who managed to get a toe on it to poke it past the onrushing Kyleakin keeper. 2-1
G/As pressure continued to pay off as Corey took the ball past one Kyleakin defender in the box, taking it to the by line, before being taken down and being awarded a penalty, David Macgregor stood up and despite the Kyleakin keeper getting a touch managed to score to make it 2-2
A free kick from Eoin was met by Ryan Watson to head the ball past the Kyleakin keeper not long after however the goal was disallowed bizarrely for Ryan apparently interfering with the goalkeepers ability to save it.
Half time 2-2
Second half was a much cagier affair, not many chances for either side, Kyleakin played a through ball to their forward, which Ali came to meet and got a toe on the ball but took out the Kyleakin forward in the process, which was deemed a penalty by the referee. Their forward stood up and converted. 3-2 Kyleakin
G/A should have had a penalty late on after Corey was wiped out again in the box, however no penalty was awarded. G/A pushed to the end however couldn’t capitalise on their pressure.
Full time 3-2
Just wasn’t to be for us today however every single one of our lads stood tall against a much more experienced Kyleakin side. The average age of the Starting 11 was just 21, and the boys played with maturity well beyond their years, we hope this is the start of a team that can only get better in years to come.
I have to say a massive thank you also to John Mackay, our club secretary who has put in so much effort behind the scenes. Also to the Gairloch Highland Gathering Comittee, who bought the new kits for the team, without this support from the local community a team like this simply couldn’t run.
