Strength Training for Runners.
What are the benefits to be had?
Strength and Conditioning has the potential to elevate your running career in two ways:
1️⃣ Robustness
Strength training can be an effective way of conditioning the body to withstand the rigours of high mileage and / or high intensity running training. This may lead to a greater consistency of training, ultimately having a positive impact on your running performance.
2️⃣ Strength Training can also have a more direct positive impact on your running performance.
An effective strength training programme is likely to enhance your running biomechanics and running economy.
These are usually measured in non-fatigued conditions - so we know that strength training can improve the efficiency of your running at the start of a race.
We are now looking at ways of measuring how these qualities deteriorate with fatigue during a race. We call this durability. AND it seems that strength training can help with durability too!
It’s one thing starting the race well, and feeling great. It’s another thing finishing the race well, without deteriorating running form.
For marathon runners working with me, the biggest difference we have noticed is in their ability to hold form and pace in the last 10km of the marathon.
Durability could possibly be the missing link in your arsenal. And strength training may just be the tool to address it!
