Strength Training for Runners.

What are the benefits to be had?

Strength and Conditioning has the potential to elevate your running career in two ways:

1️⃣ Robustness

Strength training can be an effective way of conditioning the body to withstand the rigours of high mileage and / or high intensity running training. This may lead to a greater consistency of training, ultimately having a positive impact on your running performance.

2️⃣ Strength Training can also have a more direct positive impact on your running performance.

An effective strength training programme is likely to enhance your running biomechanics and running economy.

These are usually measured in non-fatigued conditions - so we know that strength training can improve the efficiency of your running at the start of a race.

We are now looking at ways of measuring how these qualities deteriorate with fatigue during a race. We call this durability. AND it seems that strength training can help with durability too!

It’s one thing starting the race well, and feeling great. It’s another thing finishing the race well, without deteriorating running form.

For marathon runners working with me, the biggest difference we have noticed is in their ability to hold form and pace in the last 10km of the marathon.

Durability could possibly be the missing link in your arsenal. And strength training may just be the tool to address it!

Strength and Conditioning sessions for competitive runners - how does it actually all work?

1️⃣ First and foremost we have to keep running as the priority. So strength training sessions have to fit around your running training.

2️⃣ In practical terms this means most runners see me for strength training once per week. The timing of that session is ideally chosen to produce the least amount of interference with key running sessions.

3️⃣ Communication is a two way thing. I need to hear from you regarding feelings of stiffness, soreness, and tiredness. We can then modify accordingly to achieve the right dose.

4️⃣ ‘Top up’ S&C work can potentially be done on your own, at home during the week. This really depends on the individual though. How much running mileage are you doing? What else have you got going on in your life?

5️⃣ Most athletes see some early benefits. But the major benefits come from consistent application over long periods of time. This allows us to gradually progress the programme in accordance with your needs.

I’ve been at close to full capacity for a while now. But a couple of spaces have just opened up. I expect the slots to get snapped up pretty quickly, so if you have been thinking about getting in touch, now is your chance!

Here’s how I can help:

1️⃣ Specialist in strength training for runners.

Over the years I have worked with runners across the full spectrum of distances from 10.5 100m runners to 2:20 marathon runners, and ultra trail competitors. To date, all marathon runners have taken at least 10 minutes off their PB after their first season of working with me on strength training!

2️⃣ Completely private gym! No sharing the space with other gym users. High end equipment for high performance.

3️⃣ Conveniently located in Foxwood, near Acomb - and just a few miles from York city centre.

4️⃣ As a coach I value communication and evidence based practice, to make sure you are getting the most out the work you are putting in. But it’s also important for there to be good rapport between us. So I always encourage a visit to the gym to take a look around, ask any questions, and to see if we click.

Everyone knows that this time of year can affect your mental health and generally leave you feeling a bit flat.

This is the time to be proactive. Nothing helps more than incorporating more movement into your routine to get those endorphins working. It’s time to get strong and look after yourself - go for a walk or a jog, take those vitamin D supplements - and, if you’re wanting to shake up your routine even more, come and book in a PT session with me!
