Men's Mental Health - One of the last taboo's

Over the last ten years mens mental health has been and still is a huge issue. Su***de rates amongst men are huge, Men make up 75% of all deaths by su***de and it is the biggest cause of male deaths under 50! That is shocking, you could even say it's an epidemic yet in the news and media it doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves, it's just swept under the carpet. It's like being born a man makes you expendable. I know at this point the keyboard warriors are cracking their knuckles, sitting up straight, ready to attack but just wait a minute! This is not an anti-feminist post! Men need help at the moment, whatever your feelings on 'male privilege' it is not something that mental health takes into account! We have a brand new Women's only gym opening up in Frinton, and I support that wholeheartedly, I've worked in a gym and a lot of men are just outright creepy towards women in gym clothes. Women's only gyms ARE needed, and if you are a man and you think that's wrong may be you are part of the reason why!

What makes a man today?

The truth is men no longer know what their role in life is, they are constantly sent mixed messages, it's like they're walking a tightrope between being hit with the 'toxic masculinity' bombshell, and being told to 'man up and get on with it'. It's widely agreed that talking therapies are one of the best counters for mental health issues. But whilst women are quite likely to be able to sit down and talk with each other, men in general find it difficult. Men tend to talk whilst doing something. It breaks down the barriers, it's less intense, less intimidating and it allows them to be more honest and open than they would ever normally be. That's why we are putting on men only sessions at Get Hyped throughout the summer. It's open to any adult male above the age of 18, come along we'll hit some pads and bags, learn some stuff, (we do K1 Kickboxing, Muay Thai and a bit of boxing) we'll get to know each other, have some fun, maybe get a bit fitter than we were before. Afterwards if you want to hang around we'll put the kettle on and have a cuppa and talk nonsense for a half an hour. If you love it and think, actually one day I'd like to get in the ring and test myself, well, we can help make that happen too.

This KiD Can

When we started This KiD Can almost ten years ago, part of our mission was to be able to offer mentorship and hopefully provide male role models for children. Many of these children did not have a father figure in their life, plus there was (and still is) a ridiculous shortage of male primary school teachers. So for some during their first 11 years of life they could be living in pretty much a male free adult environment throughout their day to day life. For any kid that's not ideal, for boys, maybe even more so. Add to that positive discrimination policies from years back, when all you'd hear was things like 'We need to get more girls loving Science', then the 'This Girl Can' program and so on, and credit where credits due, they did a great job! Unfortunately what people tend to ignore is, the other side of positive discrimination, is, well, discrimination! And boys have suffered. Girls outperform boys in GCSE's, there are 40,000 more girls than boys in our universities, and a whopping 72% of the children who are excluded from schools are, you guessed it, boys! But what about after education? We know that 75% of su***de victims are male, but did you know 85% of rough sleepers and 96% of the prison population are male. Maybe that's not a surprise, so how about this one, 30% of domestic abuse victims are men, and YES, thats a lot less than women. BUT only 3% of places in emergency shelters are available to men.

From Boys to Men

So nearly ten years on and the boys we initially set up to help, have become men. Unfortunately not all of them made it though. That's why we are going to devote this summer to mens mental health.

I'm not trying to start a battle of the sexes here, as a society we have a problem and we need to find a solution, together! So if you, or your son, husband, boyfriend, friend, work colleague, cousin are interested in finding out more, just drop us a message and we'll make sure there is a place available!
