Wheelchair pickleball is coming to the Isle of Wight in June, with a star of the sport leading a taster session at West Wight Sports and Community Centre.
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is played on a badminton sized court with a modified tennis net, Players use paddles and a lightweight plastic ball and the game can be played as singles or doubles.
English national champion Simon Heaps will be leading the come-and-try-it session on June 13th.
Simon is a remarkable wheelchair athlete, who lost his leg to diabetes at the age of 52 but has gone on to become a British wheelchair table tennis international as well as winning a pickleball English title.
Simon’s visit to the Island is being supported by Wightlink.
The WWSCC has become a hub of pickleball on the Island, with people of all ages enjoying the activity.
Clare Griffin, WWSCC manager, said: “After the success of our wheelchair basketball taster earlier this year, we are pleased to offer another sport to people with disabilities.”
