When I was younger, I used to love a really intense massage - the more painful the better! But now my body cries out for something just as effective but less ouchy. And that's the kind of treatment I prefer to give.
As a runner, I want my legs to feel great after a massage - I don't want to lose a day or two because I'm sore and tender... my training is too precious to me (and to my husband who seeems to think I'm much nicer once I've been out and got my fix of fresh air!)
And as a post menopausal woman, I know that for a decade I couldn't sleep. My joints are now a bit creaky and my muscles take longer to recover. I value treatment that helps me feel more comfortable in my changing body, helps me to move more freely and sleep more deeply.
I don't want to have to choose between a massage that leaves me feeling relaxed and more like myself or one that directly focuses on my sore hips/knees/neck (delete as appropriate!)
Over the years I've come to believe we don't need to choose between those two options, a skilled therapist can combine the two elements into a tailored treatment that addresses what you need on that particular day. That's why I often find myself starting off with hot stones - they feel amazing and help you relax - before moving on to more targeted sports therapy techniques, maybe adding in some movement, maybe using some cupping to decompress the area after some deeper work.
