GH Media rugby round up!

Ryan Graham knows that Strathmore Rugby Club have made a strong start to the season and he believes there is still “plenty more” to come from the team going forward.

Before the break just gone, the Forfar outfit had won five out of six to sit third in the 10-team Arnold Clark National Three this term.

The league season resumes for them with a home match against bottom side Hillhead Jordanhill on Saturday at an Inchmacoble ground that few away teams win at.

Graham, the 20-year-old homegrown centre, said: “So far this season we have started strongly, but I feel we still have plenty more in the tank and plenty more to learn and improve on.

“We have a few new players in the squad this year and they have been a good addition to things and it has allowed us to build on last season.

“The team spirit is always strong at Strathmore and we have shown that so far with two last minute wins against Lasswade and Orkney in which we had to push all the way to get the wins.

“The win against Dumfries last time out was also a massive one for us as we know they are a strong outfit who had been playing well, but we managed to keep to our game and get over the line.

“Over the next few games we are looking to keep working together and focus on playing the game we want to play for the full 80 minutes.

“I think the week without a game has helped us recharge and we are now ready to go again. Every game in this league is a challenge so we are looking forward to welcoming Hills down to Inchmacoble.

“The loyal supporters that show up week in and week out definitely helps us and we love playing at home.

“We want to show the supporters that we appreciate the support they give to us players and the best way to do that is to win at the weekend.”

Graham grew up in Forfar and started playing rugby for the Strathmore sharks junior section at the age of five.

“I’ve played for Strathmore ever since,” he explained.

“I absolutely love being part of the community that’s been created at Strathmore.

“Moving up to the senior section two years ago was a big step for me, but the friendliness and experience of the more senior players made the step a very enjoyable challenge.

“We have quite a lot of Sharks coming through into senior rugby and that’s great to see.”

Team Strathie are fundraising for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Doddie’s Oui Doddle is the 2027 edition of Rob Wainwright and Mark Beaumont’s fundraising event in aid of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The events have now raised over £4.5 million since their inception in 2018.

From February 17th - 21st over 450 participants will set off from Edinburgh and journey to Paris via Twickenham Stadium, carrying two match balls on an unforgettable ride. The challenge will culminate in Paris ahead of Scotland’s Six Nations clash with France, raising awareness and funds in honour of Doddie Weir’s legacy.

A team of six riders and two support drivers from Strathmore RFC are participating in this amazing challenge under the banner of “Strathie In The Saddle”.

The team consists of Stefan Elertowicz, Jim Rowan, Gary Wood, Martyn Lowe and Ewan Maguire who will be getting the training miles in before the grand depart.

The Strathmore Community Rugby Trust say they “could not be prouder” of Struan White who is currently with the Scottish Rugby Sevens rugby squad in Kenya.

White, the former Strathmore Rugby Club player who is turning out for GHA Rugby Club in the Arnold Clark Premiership this year, has been part of the Strathmore Community Rugby Trust journey for many years, first as a participant, then as a volunteer and, most recently, as one of the community project assistants.

The Safari Sevens Tournament in Nairobi runs from today until Sunday and sees Scotland Sevens return to action for the first time since 2022.

As well as White - and Ben McDonald, the former Strathallan School pupil who is now part of the Edinburgh Rugby Academy - captain Ross McCann, Ben Salmon, Freddie Owsley, Lewis Wells, Alex Bryden, Daniel Kelly, Hamish MacArthur, Nairn Moncrieff, Finn Callaghan, Ritchie Mitchell and Murray Waugh are in the 13-strong squad.

The Strathmore Community Trust said: “It is fantastic to see where Struan’s rugby journey is taking him and we know he will gain an incredible amount from being part of the Scotland Sevens squad and experiencing rugby at this level.

“We could not be prouder, we want him to enjoy every minute and make the most of this fantastic opportunity.”
