Thirty-plus years. One club. A fair few pints of Guinness. Some absolutely terrible jokes… and the Roadrunner is still going. BEEP BEEP! 🍺😂
For over 30 years, Ian “Roadrunner” Matheson has been a constant at Inchmacoble — former Gryphons winger, volunteer, webmaster, DJ and, quite simply, one of the characters who makes Strathie, Strathie.
Long before Facebook, Instagram and the rest of us pretending we know what we’re doing online, Roadrunner introduced Strathmore’s first-ever website, taking the club into the digital age.
Then there were his days running touch. Most people carried a flag. Roadrunner carried a pint of Guinness. 🍺 Different times. Different hydration strategy.
He’s become legendary for his half-time Dad Joke of the Week.
You can see the smiles around the clubhouse before he’s even delivered the punchline — not because anyone thinks it’s going to be good, but from the sheer anticipation of finding out just how bad it’s going to be. 🤦♂️😂
But that’s what rugby clubs are built on. The rugby matters, but so do the characters, friendships, laughter and people who just keep turning up, year after year.
From Gryphons winger to webmaster, Guinness-carrying touch judge to DJ and undisputed king of the terrible Dad joke, Ian has given more than three decades to Inchmacoble.
A proper Strathie character. A thoroughly deserving Gryphon Appreciation Award winner.
