As the Amateur Championship returns this month, we look back on Freddie Tait's remarkable triumph 130 years ago.

Tait stood among our greatest early members alongside fellow Amateur Champion Horace Hutchinson and Abe Mitchell, whose legacy is immortalised on the Ryder Cup trophy.

At Royal St George's in 1896, he dominated 1892 Open Champion Harold Hilton with an 8&7 victory in the final, before claiming the title a second time in 1898.
