What a winter for the Folkestone Ladies! Less than a year ago, over half our squad had never even touched a cricket bat. Today, we finished a massive winter season as 4th Place Overall in the Kent East Indoor Softball League!
Chestfield won the toss and put us in. Our first pair Ali and Jo put on 39 for the loss of one wicket. Emma and Jane followed up with a 48 run stand without losing a wicket despite quite a few running mix ups. Michelle and Alice lost 3 wickets putting on 32, leaving us 119-4 (net 99). Despite good pairing scores something just did not click in our batting today, their bowling was reasonably straight but we left a fair few runs out there compared to our normal levels. Consequently, 99 always looking a little light.
The opening Chestfield pair put on 50 for no loss as we suffered with our bowling width. Michelle, Jo and Ali brought us back into the game restricting the second pair to 36 but taking 4 wickets including 3 in one over from Michelle. With the last pair to come Chestfield were 86-4 (net 66) compared to our 82 at this stage. Once again we were undone with a last wicket stand of 71 (for 1) dominated by one batsman. Chestfield ended up at 157 for 5 (net 132) beating us by 33 runs.
Despite the disappointment of today the winter season has been a massive success for the ladies. Less than one year ago more than 50% of our team had not touched a cricket bat before and here we are regularly playing and beating teams that have been at it for up to 5 years. We played 7 games this winter and won 5, we won one of the leagues, came second in the other and finished 4th in the playoffs. By any comparison that is a fantastic record. Perhaps more importantly we achieved it in a fun and inclusive way. Well done to all the ladies.
Much more to come in the summer as we have entered two leagues, have a series of festivals and potentially a tour to France. Whatever you want from Ladies cricket FCC is set up to cater for it.
