Following the first two races on Sunday (21st June) members will have the chance to rub shoulders with the latest stars of the recent racing series! Obviously the timing depends upon race timings but the presentations will probably be around 12:15.

So pop down to the lake on Sunday and celebrate with the winners. Or even better jump in your boat and give one of the races ago too!

VI Sailing (Sunday 14th June)

After the wild and gusty Saturday, today brought perfect conditions for one of the regular VI Sailing Sessions. Two VI sailors took to the lake with Paul Maltby and Paul Edge in two of the club Hansa Access dinghies, specially adapted to enable disabled sailors to get out on the water. Paul Edge regularly competes in a Hansa dinghy in Shotwick Lake racing series.

Jeremy Cooper accompanied a sighted volunteer helm in a club Wanderer. Les Perry, Rob King, Richard Stratton and Karen made up the supporting volunteer team.

Another successful work party was held on Saturday morning (13th June). But that was not all that was happening at Shotwick Lake yesterday. The current RYA level 1/2 course members were also out on the lake under the expert eye of senior instructor Chris Snow and his team. The weather was a challenge with high winds and impressive gusts, but that didn’t stop the course members using the newly donated RS Vision for some impressive capsize practice!
Recent series winner, Ian Duncan, assistant instructor took the opportunity to take out course members in the club Bosun dinghy. You can see more photos and videos of the day on the Shotwick Lake Sailing page. Clearly lots of fun was had!

The high winds also meant that the afternoon junior accompanied sailing event was cancelled, but that did not stop senior instructor Jude doing some informal water safety familiarisation with some of our club youngsters. Shotwick Lake Sailing has just been accepted to run the RYA Swim Safe with Onboard programme - more information about the programme, including course dates, will be out soon.

And another ‘learn about the club’ session was held by Karen for new members! Yep a busy day!

Series close…

Time flies when you are having fun! And the current three racing series are coming to the end. Racing secretary Simon Dolman sums things up as we head into the final races:

As we bring the Spring Series, Summer Afternoon Handicap and Windward Twilight Series to a close, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on what has been a fantastic period of racing and to thank everyone who has contributed to making it such a success.

Firstly, congratulations to all competitors. We have enjoyed some excellent racing across all three series, with strong turnouts, close competition and encouraging participation from both experienced racers and those newer to the sport. It has been particularly pleasing to see newer racers such as Stuart, Silvia, Paul, Nick, Brian, Dave and Claire making significant progress throughout the season, with many demonstrating that commitment can lead to much improvement on the race course....none more so than Judith who has only been racing for a few seasons and is showing great improvement week on week - watch out at the top!!

There have also been some standout performances. Phil Watson has dominated, but many other strong performances throughout the fleet have helped create some highly competitive racing. The mixed fleet continues to provide plenty of challenges and opportunities for sailors of all abilities and it is encouraging to see everyone pushing themselves while maintaining the friendly and supportive atmosphere that makes our racing so enjoyable.

The Race Sub-Committee remains keen to hear ideas from racers regarding future formats and handicap systems, including personal handicap racing and other initiatives that help ensure enjoyable and competitive racing for everyone.

Looking ahead, racers will have a choice of format for the next afternoon series beginning on the 21st June. Please make sure you register your preference via the Racing WhatsApp poll.

Prize Giving:
Prize presentations for the three completed series will take place immediately following the morning races on Sunday 21st June.

Awards to be presented include:

George Forster Memorial Plaque Windward Twilight Series
Cheshire Shield Spring Series
Brian Farrer Memorial Shield Spring Handicap PM Series
One Up Cup Awarded (by Race Sub-committee) to the sailor demonstrating exceptional performance
Thank You to Our Volunteers.
While the racing often takes centre stage, none of it would be possible without the dedicated volunteers who give up their time week after week to make racing happen. A huge thank you goes to all those who have served on race duties, operated safety boats, assisted with race management, recorded results, set courses and helped behind the scenes throughout the season. Whether planned well in advance or stepping in at short notice, your willingness to help ensures that everyone can enjoy safe and competitive racing. We are also extremely grateful to Andy Duncan and Paul Beaton and any non-racers who have volunteered their time to support race operations and to Sara for stepping in at very short notice to crew the safety boat despite already completing her volunteer commitments for the season - your help is invaluable and very much appreciated!

Special Recognition.
I would particularly like to recognise two people whose contributions often happen quietly in the background but are absolutely central to the success of our racing programme.

Dot has once again provided a fantastic galley service throughout the season. The food, drinks and warm welcome she provides have become a vital part of race days, creating a place where sailors can gather, discuss the day's racing, share experiences and enjoy each other's company. The galley is much more than somewhere to grab a bacon bap or a cup of tea—it is at the heart of our racing community. Thank you Dot, for the enormous amount of work you put in every week and thank you also to everyone who has helped support her.

Ron also deserves special recognition for his tireless commitment in his support of the galley and of club racing. Much of what Ron does happens behind the scenes, but his reliability, experience and willingness to help wherever needed play a huge part in keeping our racing programme running smoothly. The club benefits enormously from his dedication and we are all extremely grateful for everything he does.

Finally thank you to every racer, volunteer, committee member, supporter and family member who has contributed throughout these series. The success of our racing programme depends on a huge team effort and it is wonderful to see so many people willing to give their time and energy for the benefit of the club.
I look forward to seeing everyone on the water for the next series and on the 21st for the awards presentation.

VI sailing this Sunday - volunteers required.

VI Sailing is confirmed for this Sunday 14th June (weather permitting). At the moment there are 4 VI sailors confirmed. We need willing volunteers to help to run these sessions: 2 safety boat helms and 2 crew, 4 dinghy helms (Hansa or Wanderer), 3 shore-based support. Please contact Jeremy to confirm you can help.

Shotwick Lake Sailing is a great supporter of the Visually Impaired (VI) community, so that they can experience what it is like to sail a dinghy. Many of those participating have experienced sailing and racing on yachts based out of Tranmere Sailing Club (also supported by Shotwick members). but dinghy sailing brings a different perspective, being so close to the water and with such a direct response to the elements through the sails or helm.

With an emphasis on safety, two safety boats are deployed on the lake during each session and full safety briefings are required. The VI participants are accompanied by experienced club sailors but as the session progresses they are encouraged to control the sails and take a turn at helming. Usually the club fleet of Wanderers dinghies and Access Hansa dinghies are used as they provide the required stability and security. The Hansa dinghy is specially designed with a joystick helm system that means even those with physical disabilities can join in on the water.

The Vi sessions will be held on the following dates, and club members are encouraged to volunteer either providing safety boats cover, sailing or general shore support, kitting-up our visitors or assisting them onto and off the boats. If you are interested in assisting please let Jeremy know so he can add you to the volunteer list.

VI sailing dates (session preparation starts at 1:30pm - all dates are Sundays):

14th June 21st June 26th July 30th August 13th September 20th September

The Mersey based yacht Guillemot is hired from the Guillemot Trust FOC. Yacht Mermerus is a Mersey Milne class yacht which UK North Blind Sailing Association own, it is raced with other privately owned Milnes out of Tranmere Sailing Club (where the Association is based) and the adjacent Royal Mersey Yacht Club.

This Saturday 13th June, we will be holding a Q&A session for new members. Any other members who are interested are welcome to come along too.

It will be in the clubhouse at 11am, which will give you the chance to join in with the workparty first if you so wish.

The aim is to help new members feel confident to open and close the club, explain some of the rules, how the club works and for you ask questions and hopefully introduce you to some of the management committee.

Please comment below if you intend to come.
