“Enjoy your time off” is what I was told… TIME OFF? Only delusional and touched out people say that.

Maternity leave or any parental leave is not time off, it’s the hardest job in the world, albeit the most rewarding to.

Pregnancy and what comes after that is so underrated, somehow we’re all expected to just “deal with it” cause after all “you chose to have a baby”. While for most of us it was a choice, it doesn’t take away from the challenges that come with it, sleep being the biggest challenge of them all.

Not all sleep issues are formed from “bad habits”, some are actually out of parents control — such as tongue tie, intolerances, reflux, allergies etc. None of this is spoken about enough and we have to do a better job of preparing new, and seasoned parents for what could go wrong when your baby arrives that can impact sleep.

What’s the most annoying thing someone said to you before or during parental leave?

If someone recommends a newborn routine to you, please see that as a red flag 🚩

Newborn sleep is irregular and very immature, they are not meant to follow any schedule and the first 12 weeks are all about bonding, feeding and getting used to the world around them.

Too many parents stress themselves out when their newborn doesn’t follow these generic routines online, it’s simply because they can’t and shouldn’t.

Instead use wake windows as a guide

0-3 weeks: 40min - 60min
3-6 weeks: 60min - 1h15min
6-9 weeks: 1h15min - 1h30min
9-12 weeks: 1h30min - 1h45min

*this is a guide, not all babies will stay awake that long and some might be content staying awake longer*

That is why I always say use wake windows as a guide and lookout for sleepy cues:

I am getting tired cues:

1. Blank stare - appear to look bored
2. Their movements slow down

I need to go to bed now:

1. Yawning
2. Rubbing eyes
3. Getting fussy

Whoops, I am now overtired:

1. Arching back when crying
2. Harder to settle

Newborns can go from “I am getting tired” to “Whoops, I am now overtired” really quickly, which is why it’s so important to spend the newborn weeks really learning all about your baby, the more you learn the easier newborn sleep can be 🤍

This is the cute newborn pic we all post right? The one where we show a sleeping baby snuggled into us and everyone coos over this precious baby 👶🏼

But what we don’t talk about is the tears (from baby & mum) that it takes to get to this cute pic! I always talk about the 5S’s to calm a newborn but the reality is they aren’t always going to work and that is OK!

Babies, especially newborns are not robots and the world is a very stimulating place. It’s a tough job, even for a seasoned parent.

So, just because I’m a sleep consultant doesn’t mean I have the magic answer for baby sleep all the time. Like I tell all my clients, sometimes it’s trial and error, some days are better than others and sometimes your baby is just having an off day, you haven’t broken them. It’s all normal. It’s about having realistic expectations and being flexible, knowing that baby sleep will ebb and flow.

If you’re in the thick of it, I hear you, I see you, but this season to shall pass.

✨ Contact naps - they’re love in its purest form ✨

That soft rise and fall of their chest on yours.
The tiny fingers curled in trust.
The world slowing down just for you two.

In these newborn days, holding your baby while they sleep isn’t “spoiling” them, it’s meeting their deepest need for comfort and safety. Babies who nap in our arms often cry less, feel calmer, and learn the world is a safe place.

And you? You get to soak in these moments that will one day live only in memory.

One day they won’t fit in your arms.
One day they’ll nap on their own.
But today… this is exactly where they’re meant to be. 💛
