Challenging the head from above and below.

The balance pad makes the ground unstable. The book asks the head to stay level. Between the two, the cervical spine is learning to keep the head steady over a moving body.

This is phase 4 of the head and neck series, perturbation training for a symptomatic hypermobile neck. Everyday movement, a car journey, a lift, a knock in a crowd, disturbs the body and the head has to hold steady over it. This exercise trains that.

Full phase 4 is on YouTube, link in bio.

This is why you get that tension and pain at the back of your head.
If you have cervical instability, CCI, AAI, Chiari or hEDS, the muscles at the base of your skull are working overtime to protect your spinal cord. They have a direct connective tissue connection into the dura and they contract to stop it infolding when you move your head. With stretchier connective tissue, they have to work even harder.
This is from Phase 1 of my Head and Neck exercise series for hypermobility. Seven phases taking you from the very beginning through to more advanced work. Full video link in bio.
