Pushing Boundaries - My Hyrox experience! By Donna Glover
So my first Hyrox was booked when the trainer said “you guys would look cute together” regarding my son and I, so I bought the tickets based on the word cute! I honestly didn’t know what it entailed and the shock when I found out not only what the stations were but also that because we were mixed doubles I’d have to do men’s weights was huge!
Our first one was terrifying, but at least I had someone with me and we did get a great time considering it was our first and we are 40 years apart in age.
This lead us on to sign up for singles and the difference was immense! Those were really hard! I cried half way round and thought I couldn’t do it but I did push on and on the finish line swore I’d never do it again! Roll forward 10 minutes when I’ve got my breath back and I’m processing the fact it didn’t kill me so where will I go for my next one?
Funny thing is I wasn’t pleased with my time yet it has taken me 6 solos in an 18 month period to beat it but beat it I did! 10 minutes and 27 seconds off the old time and this was accomplished by a combination of both strength training and joining Farnham Town Running club!
Running was never my thing but honestly, the difference between this solo and the others, regarding my running is crazy! All of my runs were very consistent and I ran each 1k in under 6 minutes, they felt great and I overtook many on the track and didn’t stop once, not even in the Roxzone, which is where the workout stations are based.
My normal running time could be anywhere from 6-8 minutes always with a bit of walking added in, so this was a huge factor in my achievement.
Now I’m really enjoying it and aim to continue to throw myself into bettering my times and distances. I’ve got another Hyrox this weekend in Bologna with my son so let’s see if we can get another PB!
