My no.1 strategy I share with every family I work with, please please please, one of the main ways we can protect children, is by having no devices upstairs or behind closed doors

As always more education and support is needed for us all, for parents, families, children, all of us - to create healthy phone, tech, social media, AI use…

I am not anti CBT, just that a lot of ‘adapted CBT’ for children can do more harm than good 💔

Especially if the parent themselves is not supported, and too much load is placed on a young child to ‘regulate themselves’ and ‘be brave’ before they are developmentally able to 

Reducing ‘bucket fillers’ AND releasing ‘alarm’ from our children’s bodies, has much better, lasting results

And better support for parents is key 🔐

Why did no one ever teach us this? 👇

As a Clinical Psychologist, my entire career has been helping people heal from not receiving the emotional support, understanding, and co-regulation they needed growing up.

So I assumed becoming a ‘calm’ mum would come naturally.
Then I had children. 

And I quickly discovered that parenting has a way of ripping you open like nothing else.

Because children don’t arrive knowing how to regulate their emotions.

And children under 7 (I’d argue for much longer) need to feel our regulation and borrow our calm before they can develop their own.

Which is why our responses during meltdowns and big behaviours matters so much.

It can either add fuel to their fire or help put it out.

That’s exactly why I created my free CALM Guide.

The hardest part about parenting differently is realising how much of what we were taught is still sitting quietly in the background.

A child does something unsafe.
A child ignores us.
A child pushes a boundary for the tenth time that day.

And suddenly we find ourselves reaching for consequences that sound reasonable on the surface but are really carrying a different message underneath.

“If you do that again, no TV.”

“If you don’t listen, no pudding.”

“If you run off, we’re leaving.”

The intention is usually good.

We’re trying to teach.
We’re trying to keep them safe.
We’re trying to stop the behaviour.

But fear of losing something isn’t the same as learning a skill.

A child who runs off doesn’t need punishment for being immature.

They need support with a skill they don’t yet have.
Impulse control takes years to develop.

Safety is our responsibility before it becomes theirs.
Sometimes the most powerful response isn’t adding a consequence.

It’s asking:
“What support does my child need to be successful next time?”

Because the goal isn’t raising children who comply because they’re scared of losing something.

The goal is raising children who gradually build the skills, confidence, and self-regulation they’ll need for life.

I thought I would be a naturally calm parent... 🫠
Then I became a parent nearly 8 years ago and it shocked me how much my children’s emotions brought up in me.

The whining.
The meltdowns.
The screaming.

The moments when I’d spent all day holding it together and then suddenly found myself reacting in a way I never intended to.

I knew my kids needed to borrow my calm.
The problem was, I couldn’t always find it.

So I spent years trying to “stay calm.”

Holding it in.
Pushing it down.
Trying harder.

Until eventually I’d reach my limit and I just HATED how my days ended in yelling. 

Because regulation isn’t about staying calm all the time.
It’s about knowing how to release the stress and ground yourself when chaos surrounds you. 

That’s the part nobody taught us.

And it’s the part our children need from us most. It’s how they learn to develop these skills for themselves.

As a mum of three & a Clinical Psychologist, I’ve created ten simple grounding tools that genuinely calm myself, even in the middle of sibling fights, bedtime chaos, or a full-blown meltdown.

They’re the same tools I share with my clients because when we learn to regulate ourselves, everything changes.

Not just for us.
For our children too.
