Racing for all ages and Belgian Fries. Two good reasons to sneak off early on a Thursday!

This Thursday will have slightly different courses, still all on the flat, entirely in view of the spectators for the U6/U8/U10 racers, a few more slopes for U12/U14 and beginners and longer laps on the full course.

More good news is that Michael and his Belgian Fries wagon will be joining us for refreshments. If you havenโ€™t experienced Belgian Fries, ketchup and mayo are traditional but we like the Hannibal sauce for extra zing ๐Ÿ˜‹

Sign on and course practice for the younger riders from 4.45, there will be a medal and prize for them.

Book in advance https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/317881/Sprockets-Summer-CX-2025-Race-2 or enter on the day.

See you on Thursday!

On Sunday we opened the season for the Flyers and their families with a 5 miles and-a-bit-more ride starting and finishing at the Basingstoke Canal Centre in Mytchett.

The weather was kind to us and after a pitstop at Frimley Lodge, people still wanted more, so we added a little more riding around the local woods, including some of the easier trails. We also found out that bottom of puddles is not always as firm as Coach Graham seems to think it is!

Thanks to everyone who came along. We're looking forward to doing more of these rides over the warmer months.

We've just posted our dates for 2025 on our website: https://www.fccc.org.uk/kids/

We're having a couple of family rides on 16th March (~5 miles) and another date TBC (~10 miles). These are guided social rides for kids and their adults, mostly off-road, with coaches and helpers.

Coaching sessions will be back on Sunday mornings, with the first session on 27th April. In these sessions the aim is to have fun and improve bike handling skills and confidence in a safe off-road environment.

05/09/2024

We return from our summer break this Sunday with a session of whole group games and will have a cyclocross course set up.

We'll be running five further sessions this autumn before we break for the winter:

8th September: 9-10am King George V Playing Field
15th September: 9-10am King George V Playing Field
22nd September: No session
29th September: 9-10am King George V Playing Field
6th October: 9-10am King George V Playing Field
13th October: 9-10am King George V Playing Field

If your young rider is interested in a free taster session on either 8th Sept or 15th, please either email us or send us a facebook message.

(Unfortunately the image I wanted to use wouldn't upload, so please enjoy my choice of GIF)

Dear FCCC Flyers

Wow. What a morning?

We would like to thank all of the families who put their trust in us again this term.

Our sessions ended in a two-hour double header including a game that all three classes could participate in at the same time.

After the cold start the sun ๐ŸŒž came out and blessed our sessions. That wasnโ€™t the only thing warming up the Flyers!

Those hills โ›ฐ๏ธ today were quite a challenge.

Aspen were using their gears. One new Flyer started his first time out with FCCC Flyers - Kids Cycling Classes on a small slalom, braking and the concentric circle before moving on to demonstrate his use of gears. ๐Ÿ‘

Bergamo were using gravity and traversing the slopes (including needing to descend and ascend across a small course on the sloping hill) ๐Ÿ‘

Colorado were burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ calories climbing on the steeper slope and descending the giant slalom. For a split second I thought I was watching a version of โ›ท๏ธ Ski-Sundayโ€™s (giant slalom). ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Well done to everyone ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

The game of cyclingโ€™s equivalent of Musical Chairs (chasing the diminishing number of cones) was an excellent way to end the season.

Well done to the parents and uncle who participated in the final game. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

We look forward to seeing you on November 5th for the next term.

Paul Hosemann (on behalf of the coaching team). ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™

Dear Families and Flyers

As all cyclists quickly learn the world is, in fact, NOT flat.

In sport we are most often judged in terms of speed, duration or elevation.

Many of the biggest world cycling events are most often won or lost on the hills.

It is why FCCC Flyers devote a proportion of our coaching sessions to cycling up and down them.

Many riders dislike hills (or like to complain about them at least) but most seek them out in some way shape or form whether they race to the top or simply grind away in a low gear at a tempo they can sustain.

Paraphrasing slightly, one famous champion once said โ€œHills never get any easier itโ€™s just that as you progress you get faster on them!โ€

This weekend coming our focus is on hills - ascending them, traversing them and descending them.

A knowledge of gears becomes critical the more a rider climbs or needs to generate speed and/or reduce effort etc.

When one runs out of gears we need to learn how to ride out of the saddle assuming we choose not to get off and walk! ๐Ÿ˜Š

This weekend our Flyers will each get the chance to test their knowledge and ability on a variety of challenges on and off the hills.

Weโ€™re looking forward to seeing everyone in Frimley on Sunday.

Paul Hosemann (on behalf of the coaching team)
