Earlier this season, in our match against Trojans, Gareth suffered a serious neck injury that brought his rugby career to an unexpected end.
After plenty of thought, Gareth has made the difficult decision to hang up the boots. While his playing days may be over, one thing is certain – he will always be a Heathen.
Our resident South African, our own little Springbok, Gaf has given so much to this club since joining and has been a huge part of the Heathens family both on and off the pitch. His determination, commitment and character have left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to play alongside him.
As we celebrate our end of season awards this evening, we wanted to remind him that although he may no longer be pulling on the shirt, he remains a massive part of this club and will always have a place here.
The road to recovery continues, and we look forward to welcoming him back around the club in whatever capacity that may be when the time is right.
Once a Heathen, always a Heathen. ❤️🖤
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to physio, who was brilliant with Gareth throughout the incident, as well as everyone from both clubs who helped look after him and supported him while we waited for the ambulance. Moments like these show what the rugby community is all about.
