OUR CLUB SAVES LIVES!
Congratulations to club members Jack, Lois and Ella for two dramatic rescues at Gyllyngvase beach this evening.
After weeks of calm weather, the easterly winds picked up causing high seas and a powerful shore break. Clubbies met for evening training, and after risks were assessed and appropriate safety measures put in place, decided that swimming could proceed.
Within minutes, our water safety board paddler, Jack, noticed a young girl caught in a rip on the south-west side of the beach. Despite being 100m away, Jack reached her in a matter of moments, got her onto the rescue board and returned her to her father, who waiting anxiously on the beach.
Jack returned to his position and training continued, but only 20 minutes later he spotted another person being pulled out to sea by the rip. As Jack paddled to his rescue the shore-based rescue team, Lois and Ella formed a quick plan. Lois swam out with a rescue tube to assist the casualty, who was having difficulty staying on the board. Meanwhile Ella organised additional rescue equipment and asked a member of the public to be ready to call the emergency services.
Thankfully, the casualty was returned to shore without further incident. Jack returned to his post, and Lois and Ella continued to monitor and advise the public on water safety in the challenging conditions.
Thanks to the skills and expertise of our volunteer club members, two lives were saved.
**Important Safety Message**
The waves may look fun, but strong easterly winds can quickly create dangerous rip currents.
- Where there are waves, there are rip currents
- Avoid the right-hand side of the beach (near the sauna) in easterly winds
- If in doubt, stay out of the water
- If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
