In 2019 Claire Sharp completed the AZAB race with her father Mel Sharp of A2 rigging. She is now doing something even more challenging, and rowing the Atlantic, single handed, raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease charity.

10 nationalities represented (30 Brits, 7 Dutch, 4 French, 2 Irish and remainder American, Belgian, German, Manx/Polish, Portuguese and Swiss.
Portuguese entrant has to sail twice as far!

Back in 1975, the OSTAR – Plymouth to New York – was the big dream for solo ocean sailors, but not everyone could sail to New York ..... they came up with another idea.
Then Yachting World magazine published a suggestion.
Four sailors took the idea and ran with it.
What if there was an ocean race that was challenging, exciting – but achievable?
And so AZAB was born.
50 years later, sailors are still chasing that dream. 🌊

Welcome to the new official home of the Azores and Back Race on Facebook.
On 6 June 2027, sailors will leave Falmouth and head 1,200 nautical miles across the Atlantic to Ponta Delgada in the Azores — before turning around and racing all the way back again.
Created by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in 1975, AZAB has been challenging sailors for more than 50 years.
Over the coming months we'll be bringing you the competitors, boats and people behind the race, stories from the AZAB archive, preparations in Falmouth and the Azores — and ways for the wider community to become part of AZAB 2027.
