𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬: The City of Ghent was a 64m steel cargo ship built in Germany and launched in 1953. She was a typical cargo ship of the era with a clean shear line, raised bow and compact superstructure set aft, powered by a single screw. She would have appeared more sturdy and practical than elegant. Currently there are no pictures of the City of Ghent available, but deck plans can be accessed via Lloyds archives online (under Dalkey Coast) that gives us an idea of how she may have looked, along with photos of other vessels built in the same yard.

𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗘: The 15th Nov 1955 was the night the City of Ghent met her fate, it was a dark evening with poor visibility and whilst on passage to Fowey from Dublin she aground on rocks near Black Head (Coverack). She was re-floated quickly, but continued to take on water, lost power and listed heavily to starboard eventually she rolled over and sank. Fortunately all the crew were rescued by Cadgwith lifeboat with assistance MV Anteriority, another coastal cargo vessel in the area. The rescue is recorded in a photo taken at Cadgwith Cove Inn of a very relieved looking crew.

𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬: The City of Ghent wreck sits completely inverted, 4m proud of the seabed in 25-30m. The bow is still recognisable as a bow, and with numerous plates missing leaving the frame it is quite photogenic. The mid-section has collapsed and engine room machinery is visible through sections of missing hull. Towards the stern you will find the prop missing and the rudder lying off to the side of the wreck, but the stern itself is still quite intact and is an impressive sight. The City of Ghent is a very enjoyable dive and a favourite of ours on Reef Runner, you will often find it on the schedule over neap tides.

Typical UK Bank Holiday weekend weather, but monitoring the forecasts, we found a short window of opportunity first thing this morning until lunchtime when it was due to deteriorate again. Taking into consideration the winds over the last few days, we opted for the Volnay as it had likely been protected from the winds more than other sites. We were joined today by divers from Scuba Shack in the Midlands, they didn't pick weekend to visit Cornwall but we were really pleased we could get them out on one dive at least. They had 5m of viz and saw lots of starfish, crab, corkwing and ballan wrasse, sea bream and even had a cormorant visited them on their safety stop! 😁

A recent sidescan shows the iconic frame on this wreck that houses as memorial plaque to those lost. It also shows some of the masts that can be used to navigate from one side of the wreckage site to the other. We didn't get the whole wreck in this pass, but practice makes perfect and we'll try to get a better one soon.

Darn easterlies strike again, but we had hardy, experienced divers aboard who wouldn't let a bit of swell deter them. They were rewarded with walls covered in jewel anemones of all colours and masses of juvenile fish. Some very inquisitive cuckoo wrasse were nudging a divers lens and Ruth saw a free swimming conger that came to rest just in front of her allowing a good look, shame she doesn't have a camera. A great dive though, enjoyed by all.
