Just a reminder that our next Willsmore Work Party is coming up!

📅 Saturday 26th September
⏰ 9am
📍 Willsmore Lake, Fakenham

We’ll be getting Willsmore ready for winter, with the main focus on checking and repairing the perimeter fencing, alongside cutting back, tidying and general maintenance around the fishery.

💪 Jobs for all ages and abilities — you don’t need any particular experience, and even if you can only spare an hour or two, it all helps!

If you have them, please bring spades/shovels, loppers, hand saws (no chainsaws), gloves and suitable footwear. No tools? No problem — an extra pair of hands is just as valuable.

☕🍰 FREE HOT DRINKS & CAKE FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS!

Coming along? Please let us know!
It really helps us plan the jobs and get an idea of numbers. Send us a message on Facebook or email [email protected].

🧠🎉 THE TEAM SHEET IS NEARLY FULL! 🎉🧠

Our Fakenham Angling Club FUN Quiz Night is getting closer, and we’ve now only got room for around 2–3 more teams!

📅 Saturday 3rd October 2026
📍 The Gallow – Main Bar, Fakenham Racecourse
⏰ Quiz starts at 7pm
💷 £3 per person
👥 Teams of 1–6 people

This is a FUN quiz night — you definitely don’t need to be a quiz expert! Expect a good mix of general knowledge, music, sport and picture rounds, plenty of laughs and a bit of friendly competition along the way. 😄

🙋 DON’T HAVE A TEAM? NO PROBLEM!

If you’d like to come along but don’t have a team, please don’t let that put you off. We can put a team together on the night or, where they’re happy to have you, add you to another team that still has space.

🎤 Your Quiz Master for the evening will be our very own Keith Baker.

🏆 And, of course, there’s the all-important trophy waiting for our winning team!

⚠️ With space for only around 2–3 more teams, don’t leave it too late if you’d like to join us.

📆 Bookings close Saturday 26th September — or sooner if we fill all the available spaces.

Get your team name and numbers over to us, or simply let us know if you’d like to come along and need a team.

👏 A big thank you to Carben Construction Ltd!

A big thank you to local company Carben Construction for the delivery of pea gravel, which will be put to good use as part of our ongoing peg repairs and maintenance across the club’s waters. 🎣

We always use the guys at Carben for our aggregate needs and, as always, they’ve provided us with a fantastic and reliable local service.

Supporting local businesses wherever we can is important to us, and it’s great to have dependable local companies helping us keep our waters maintained for our members.

Thanks again to everyone at Carben Construction for your continued support! 👏

🐚 Did You Know? Freshwater Mussels at Willsmore

You might be surprised to learn that Willsmore is home to some rather impressive freshwater mussels!

These large mussels are believed to be Swan Mussels, one of Britain’s native freshwater mussel species, although they can be difficult to distinguish from the closely related Duck Mussel.

Far from simply sitting on the lake bed, freshwater mussels are an important part of the aquatic ecosystem. They are filter feeders, drawing water through their bodies and feeding on tiny suspended particles, while also playing a role in nutrient cycling within the lake.

Their life cycle is particularly interesting too. The microscopic larvae of freshwater mussels temporarily attach themselves to fish before eventually dropping off and settling onto the lake bed, where they continue to grow.

The two pictured were recently found at Willsmore Lake and are fantastic examples of some of the less obvious wildlife living beneath the surface.

🐚 If you come across freshwater mussels while fishing, please leave them where you find them and return any accidentally disturbed live mussels carefully to the water.

It’s not always the fish that make Willsmore interesting! 🎣🌿

📍 Willsmore Lake, Fakenham

We’re holding our next work party at Willsmore and would love to see as many members as possible come along and lend a hand.

This work party will focus on getting the lake ready for winter, including checking the perimeter fencing and carrying out repairs where necessary, cutting back and tidying areas around the fishery, and general maintenance.

Don’t worry if you don’t have tools — an extra pair of hands is just as valuable!

📌 CAN ANY OF OUR MEMBERS HELP? – OUTDOOR NOTICE BOARD WANTED

We’re looking to improve how we display information and notices for members at Foxley Lakes.

At the moment, notices have to be pinned or stapled wherever we can find a suitable spot, and we’d really like to tidy things up with one or ideally two proper outdoor notice boards.

Before we go out and purchase new ones, we thought we’d ask our membership first.

Ideally, we’re looking for something that is:

• Suitable for permanent outdoor use
• Weatherproof
• Ideally lockable
• Clear-fronted – not glass
• Large enough to display several A4 notices
• In reasonable, usable condition

We’re not necessarily looking for something for free. The club is happy to consider purchasing a suitable board if somebody has one available, or perhaps one that is no longer required by a business, organisation or workplace.

Equally, if any of our members own or work for a business that supplies this sort of thing, we’d be very interested to hear from you.

Something similar to what we have currently at Willsmore (pictured below) would be ideal.

If you think you may be able to help, please message us via Facebook or email [email protected].

🔥 FIRE RESTRICTIONS LIFTED – ALL FAC WATERS 🔥

Following a further review by the Fakenham Angling Club Committee, we can confirm that the temporary fire restrictions across all FAC waters have now been lifted with immediate effect.

Recent changes in the weather and current conditions mean the committee is satisfied that the additional temporary restrictions are no longer necessary.

⚠️ Please remember: The lifting of the temporary restrictions does not change the existing club rules.

Open fires and BBQs remain strictly prohibited at all FAC waters at all times.

We ask all members to continue to act responsibly, use common sense and respect our waters, surrounding land and wildlife.

Conditions will continue to be monitored, and temporary restrictions may be reintroduced in the future should circumstances require them.

A huge thank you to all our members for your patience, understanding and cooperation while the additional restrictions have been in place.

🎣 Thank you and tight lines!

🎣 ROD LICENCE REMINDER

We had a visit from an Environment Agency Officer at Willsmore Lake this afternoon as part of their routine patrols.

One of our members was fishing at the time and had their rod licence checked — all present, correct and above board. ✅

Just a timely reminder that EA patrols do take place and rod licence checks can happen at any time, so please make sure your licence is valid whenever you’re fishing.

Tight lines! 🎣

🎁🎄 THE CHRISTMAS BINGO PRIZES ARE ALREADY COMING IN! 🎄🎁

We’ve been absolutely delighted with the response to our prize appeal for Fakenham Angling Club’s first ever Christmas Bingo!

A huge thank you to:

🎟️ Pensthorpe
🎬 Majestic Cinema King’s Lynn
🎄 Thursford

…who have already very kindly donated some fantastic prizes for the evening! 👏❤️

But we’re not finished yet!

We’re still looking for businesses, attractions and individuals who may be willing to donate a prize and help us build an amazing selection for the night.

And remember – the prizes certainly aren’t all fishing related! We’d love vouchers, experiences, days out, hampers, gifts, products, meals, activities or anything else that would make a great prize.

📅 Thursday 10th December 2026
📍 Sculthorpe Village Hall

❤️ 100% of all raffle ticket sales will go directly to The Big C Cancer Charity.

If you or your business would like to contribute, please message the Fakenham Angling Club page or email [email protected] and we’ll arrange collection.

And please give some love to the fantastic businesses already supporting us! 👏

Who else can we add to the list?

🐝 WASP NESTS – ALL CLEAR! ✅

Good news! Following treatment earlier this week, all of the known wasp nests at Willsmore and Foxley are now inactive.

🎣 All previously affected pegs and areas are now OPEN as normal.

A big thank you to Paul Gooch for dealing with the nests and to our members for respecting the temporary closures while the treatment took effect.

As always, please remain vigilant around our waters and report any new nests or significant wasp activity to the club.
