Sunday 6th September, 24 members took part in the Chairman’s Cup, with the format based on the ever-popular Big Bowls Bash. After 18 ends, it was Pat Packer, Colin Purvis and skip Shaun Morrey who came out victorious with an impressive plus 14.
The runners-up were Diane Pratt, Margo Allen and skip Rod Davidson, who finished just two shots behind on plus 12. Clearly, it was a closely fought contest!
After all the action on the green, everyone could relax and enjoy a barbecue, organised by Bob Baker.
A big thank you to Bob for putting it all together. There’s nothing quite like a good barbecue after a hard afternoon of bowls, especially when you’ve worked up an appetite chasing those elusive woods!

Sarah Takes the John Tucker Trophy
Saturday, 29th August saw 21 players enter the John Tucker Trophy, a knockout competition played over 10 ends with four woods.
The weather was a little damp, although that didn't stop some excellent bowling, particularly from some of our newer players, who certainly weren't letting a bit of rain dampen their enthusiasm.
After a long day and 30 ends of bowling each, it was Sarah Westacott and Dave Lee who battled their way through to the final.
The spectators, some of whom had been in position since the early hour of 9.30am, were rewarded with a final that was well worth waiting for. After 10 ends, neither player could be separated, with the score standing at 7–7.
An extra end was called for, and Sarah managed to keep her cool despite the weather, to take the trophy.
Congratulations to Sarah, and well done to Dave on a closely fought and thoroughly entertaining final.
A huge thank you must also go to all the markers who gave up their time to help throughout the competition. Some managed to stay reasonably dry, while others appeared to believe that getting completely soaked was part of the job description!
All in all, another enjoyable day at Phear Park, although perhaps next year's competition should come with umbrellas as standard!

Saturday saw 24 players compete in the Phear Trophy a trophy which is in memory of MargaretLock. It was played with 4 triples in Team A who all played each other and the same in Team B. After 18 ends cards are checked and the winners of Team A play the winners of Team B. The winners of Team A with plus 8 were Pete Tate, Margo Allen and skip John Whyte played winners of Team B with plus 2 Mark Hutson Colin Purvis and skip Sarah Westacott. After playing another 6 ends Team B came out on top +4. Congratulations to Mark Colin and Sarah. The trophy was then presented by the Captain Margo Allen

On Saturday 1st August in much cooler conditions Phear welcomed 4 triples from Culm Vale. Although Phear Park won on 2 rinks and drew on 1 we lost overall 66-67. The Parks best rinks was Bobbie Vanstone, Shaun Morrey and skip John Robins who won by 8 shots. Credit must go to Sarah Westacott and get team Martin Slater and Pete Tate who came back from being 17-9 down on the 14th end to secure a draw. As Culm Vale said the match was a draw as everyone played in the spirit it was meant friendly.

Phear Park Bowling Club enjoyed a successful and busy weekend, with members claiming silverware and recording victories both at home and away.

On Saturday, six teams of four competed for the Peter Nelson Shield, held in memory of former club Captain and President Peter Nelson. The competition went right down to the wire, with just one shot separating the top two rinks.

Taking the title with a score of +3 were Martin Slater, Ollie Darville, Margo Allen and skip Les Gay. Finishing as runners-up on +2 were Mike Riches, Dave Lee, Sue Smith and skip Bob Baker.

Peter's widow, Liz Nelson, presented the Shield to the winners, who also received prizes. The day concluded with an enjoyable fish and chip supper, organised by Liz, whose efforts were greatly appreciated by everyone at the club.

On Sunday, four Phear Park triples travelled to Cullompton, where cooler conditions greeted the players after the recent hot weather. Despite a particularly tricky green, Phear Park secured a hard-fought 65-60 victory. Top rink honours went to Sue Smith, Martin Rock and skip Bob Pearce, who finished with an impressive +9.

The club's successful weekend had begun on Friday at Budleigh Salterton's Victory Cup, where Martin Rock, Rick Tatchell and Rod Davidson produced an outstanding performance to win the competition with a remarkable +24.

It was an excellent few days for Phear Park, with success on the green and plenty of reasons to celebrate both at home and away.

What a great day we had on Saturday.
Staff and friends of Holly Tree Inn came along for a game.
We started with some coaching then the teams of three had a match amongst themselves. Playing a Bowls Devon game.
The sun shone and everyone was enjoying the afternoon. It wasn't long before the competitive side came out on some rinks! The overall winners were Faye, Martyn, and Jack🏆
Well done guys. We went back to The Holly Tree for some well earned cold drinks.

On Saturday the 28th June Phear Park ran their annual Dick Mann Triples Competition where mixed triples compete for this internal shield. The format is a drive where players move to a new rink after 4/5 ends and the overall winners are those whose score has the largest difference to the teams they have played.

This year the winners were the triple of Nigel Oates, Roger Pedlar and skip Sarah Westacott with an impressive +22 shot difference.

The afternoon was very enjoyable - especially the excellent cream tea.

Phear Park Bowling Club have had a busy May and June so far, but not for all the right reasons.

May started beautifully with some very enjoyable games, Heavitree, Bradninch, and Uffculme.

Our first being away to Heavitree, which sadly we didn't come out in top, we finished the game 59-55 so only a margin. However, we did win on one rink with a great score of 20 points played by Keith Raffel, Nigel Oates and skipped by Sarah Westacott.

Playing host to Bradninch, we unfortunately sustained another loss, 61-67. But similar to the Heavitree game, we were successful on one rink, players Sarah-Jane Cairns, John Whyte and Skip Sarah Westacott had a 19-15 point win.

Off to Uffculme then, and finally successful, winning 70-53. With a stand out rink skipped by David Hawkins, Nigel Oates the second and lead by John Horne, with a spectacular 24-8 lead.

Then in the beginning of June we had news from our green keeper. He had noted a problem with the green and after some investigation, he found that we had quite a bad infestation of crane fly larvae. These can cause devastating effects to greens as they feed on the grass and roots leaving it in a bad way. We had to close our green for a little while to allow the treatment to be carried out. We are back up and running and hopefully many more games to come this season.
