Match report- Exmouth 2 v Exwick Women’s Super 8s pairs.

Wick women’s winning a-ways!

On Sunday 23rd August, the women’s super 8s pairs Hardball team took to the Woodbury and Newton st Cyres field against Exmouth in what was to be their 2nd to last game of the season sitting
top of the table with Exmouth close behind. Despite a shortage of players we managed to gather a team of seven for the 5 o’clock game!

In the spirit of the game we agreed to field first while Exmouth waited for their wicked keeper to arrive.
Exmouth’s first pair batted well, and were kept to 22 runs from the four overs but did lose a wicket to a run out, sportingly the ball was thrown in from their own sub fielder whom no doubt got rinsed for it, but some smart work from Stacey behind the stumps in her first hardball appearance as keeper had them regretting the poorly timed extra run.
The second pair slightly less strong than the first but managed to find a few runs and scored 21. Much of this was thanks to wicks generosity in the extras column apart from Gabby that notched up another maiden over.

Exmouths third pair had a strong leg side player who found the boundary on repeated occasions between the two putting on 42. Sky did find a beautiful
Line between bat and pad to skittle J Patrick and take the only bowled wicket of the innings.
The final pair had Exmouth star player F Sampson whom managed to single-handedly score 32 off 18 balls with some strong cover drive boundaries finding gaps in the field. Interestingly an F Sampson also plays for Exmouth in the Division 2 Hardball league… but enough of that.

With such a strong finish it felt like heads were dropping in the half time break, so Gabby decided to announce that just prior to the match she had received a message from the Seaton team informing us that they had to concede the game on Thursday!

This led to some scrambled calculations and the conclusion that we had probably won the league… maybe…

Rejuvenated … or were we… the strong opening pair of Caitlin and Skye took up the chase needing 121! Caitlin made 15 off 15 balls and Skye 14 off 9 and thanks to some wayward bowling the pair put on 41 to start us off!

Abi and Kate were next up with 5 boundaries between them and a lot of running the pair scored 42 runs for the loss of no wicket (although Kate got lucky and was dropped on the first ball of the pair!)

Stacey and Cheryl formed the third pair. Stacey however was bowled in the first over, but that must have motivated her as she proceeded to hit 3 boundaries. The pair put on 40 for the loss of 1 wicket which put Wick at 119/1.

Gabby had been set a loose target of 45 runs… to become the highest run scorer in the Devon pairs leagues… she was already the leading run scorer in the Jurassic league.

She duly set about this monumental effort with a boundary off the first ball. Cheryl not to be outdone joined in and then lost her wicket in the final ball of the over. Suddenly everyone watching felt a bit tense… could this be the beginning of a fight back??

Well in a word - No - Gabby had other ideas… hitting 6 more boundaries and assuring the wick of victory both in the game and in the league!

We had done it! Champions of the league … we did the double! A moment of celebration was shared in good spirit with Exmouth whom partook in bubbles with us!

Finals will be played on 6th September at Cornwood CC! But before then… the Softball team has a playoff away at Cullompton on the 3rd September. I know that the team would appreciate all the support they can get so come along and give us a cheer!!

Exwick vs Thorverton (softball)

The women’s team headed to Thorverton Tuesday night for the first of two softball matches this week.

Up at bat, Kate and Haniyah had a great start for Exwick with A LOT of running, along with 2 4s from Kate and 1 4 from Haniyah. Stacey and Abi were up second. Abi was unlucky with a catch behind the stumps but turned it around with a 4 later on. Third it was Cheryl and Britt, with a 4 for Cheryl off a missed ball from the keeper and a 4 for Britt, but on the next ball, they got greedy and got run out. Final pair for Exwick was Gabby and Freya. Gabby with an incredible 5 4s and Freya with a perfectly placed hit in the gap, lovely.

In the field, Gabby had the first wicket for Exwick with a quick catch while bowling. Next wicket was a catch from Britt behind the stumps (with Cheryl doing some great bowling). Then it was a beautiful delivery from Freya for a wicket in the 10th over and Cheryl (Bob) with an excellent catch in the field in the 15th over. Incredible running and fielding especially from Kate, Stacey, Abi, Freya and Haniyah and bowling from Cheryl, Freya, Abi, Haniyah and Gabby.

Final score Exwick 293 and Thorverton 282.

New Mower for the Cricket Club!

We have reached the point where out aging mower has been out of service more than in service during this season. This has meant playing on grass that is too long for cricket!

We have sourced a replacement and need to raise some of the money towards the cost of it to allow us to purchase it.

Even the smallest pledge will help. We are a community club offering cricket for everyone aged 4 and up and entirely run by volunteers.

Please help us reach this goal if you can, or if you are interested in supporting the club in other ways please get in touch with us.

To fund the replacement of our ride on mower to allow us to keep offering adult, junior and women's cricket across two pitches in Exwick

Exwick vs Seaton (women’s hardball)

The women’s hardball team went on the road to Seaton for another incredibly hot Sunday match. Kate lost the toss so Exwick headed onto the field… well, except Stacey who subbed for Seaton (thanks buddy!)

Gabby had the first wicket for Exwick with a catch from Caitlin (Barney) in the 2nd over and another wicket in 8th over with a lovely delivery. Kate got 2 back to back wickets (woo!) in the 4th over with some brilliant bowling. Abi was quick with her hands and had a run out in the 5th over and another wicket in 10th over. Haniyah sent the bails flying in the 11th over. There were a few drops in the field (including some against our own Stacey New) but overall Exwick did well. Shout outs to Gabs for an amazing 2.75 economy and a maiden in the 12th over, Cheryl (Bob) for sacrificing her body to stop some boundaries, Bella for sprinting after some fast balls on the parched pitch, Kate for back to back wickets, Abi for two great wickets, Caitlin for a great catch, and Haniyah for some solid bowling and fielding.

Up at bat, Kate and Haniyah had a really solid start for Exwick; Haniyah with 3 4s and Kate with 2 4s (and lots of fast running). Caitlin and Bella were up next; Bella with an incredible 5 4s (France is clearly treating her well!) and one 4 from Caitlin. Third up it was Cheryl and Britt, back to back wickets (ouch, rough) but on the bright side, Cheryl had back to back 4s and a late 4 from Britt. Gabby and Abi up last with some big hits. Gabby with 3 4s and Abi with one as well.

And a mini write up for our Exwick/Seaton player, Stacey! She managed a bold move to stop a boundary and had a great 4 (she was also a great sport while we heckled her).

Final score Exwick 308/3 and Seaton 257/7

Exwick vs Exmouth (hardball)

The team headed down to the beach for a Sunday evening match and couldn’t have asked for better weather! Skip lost the toss so Exwick were heading into the field first…

First wicket of the night came from Gabby making a catch while running backwards off a bowl from Cheryl. Next it was Kate with a lovely bowl. And final ball on second pair, Britt with a catch behind the stumps with Gabby bowling. Haniyah getting a run out while bowling, lovely! Gabby with another lovely bowl (she was a machine). Then back-to-back wickets with a wicked bowl from Bob and a catch from Gabby. Final ball of the night, with a perfect wicket from Gabby. Grand total of 9 wickets with 4 from skip (along with her 2 catches). Shout out to Haniyah for running hard to stop a boundary, and lots of quick running in the field from Caitlin, Stacey and Abi.

Up at bat, Kate and Haniyah kicked things off for Exwick. Kate with a massive 4 4s and lots of brilliant running with Haniyah. Next pair was Stacey and Cheryl (Bob). Stacey kept things moving with 2 more 4s. Then it was Caitlin Smith and Britt up third. Britt had Exwick’s only wicket… hung her head with shame. Then had a 4 and Caitlin had some well placed hits. Final pair for Exwick was Gabby, and first time hard baller, Abi! With AC/DC getting her amped up, Gabby started things off with a 4 and then 3 more (tying with Kate). Some big hits from Abi, one going over heads. Well done Exwick!

Exwick 333/1 and Exmouth 284/9. Thanks to Simon for coming out to umpire and Cheryl for the next level snacks keeping us happy.

Match Report!

After a few weeks absence in the social media for the adult teams we will be catching up this week with details of fixtures and results from the last few weeks starting with the 1st XI's win at Budleigh last Saturday.

Another hot and sunny day saw the 1st XI travel the seemingly short distance to The Holt to take on Budleigh 3rd XI. The afternoon started out badly when 9 of the 11 Exwick players were late arriving due to traffic and some road closures that confused the Sat Navs.

Luckily P Walker Jr was on time and able to toss up, win and chose to bat! With the rest of the team arriving at 1257 for a 1pm start we arrived to fine Phil and Bhaski padded up and ready to go, with P Walker Snr having been talked into umpiring.

While everyone else admired the amazing facilities at the new Budleigh ground the Exwick openers set about their business is fine fashion with Phil finding the boundary several times over a quick outfield. When Bhaski fell at the start of the 5th over things were still looking rosey, however a flurry of wickets from the good Budleigh bowlers saw us reducede to 38-5 at the end of the 11th over.

S Roy joined Phil at the crease and they started a bit of recovery putting on a futher 21 runs before Roy was bowled. 5 balls later, and with the score still on 59 Phil was caught in a very sharp chance at gully by a player nicknamed the mini giraffe! It was a great catch and a mightily dissapointed Phil trudged back to the pavillion for good 33.

In form S Culy and new recruit K Ahmad steadied the ship again taking the score to 99 before Samuel got caught in a slightly mistimed shot over the top for a respectable 20. Kamran fell 8 balls for a solid 19.

Leaving the skipper and vice captain at the crease both Sean and Simon picked up a 4 each and were just beginning to settle in when Sean made contact with the floor while on the drive and chipped up a caught and bowled to finish the Exwick innings on 116.

During a fantastic tea Exwick spoke as a team about how to approach the fielding innings. Determination, fight and spirit were key, as well as keeping every run possible down.

Out came Exwick with determination and this was rewarded in the 3rd over when superstar bowler A Kharoti had the Budleigh opener caught at slip in the first of 2 sharp catches of the afternoon, fast and low the skipper just managed to get down low enough to get both hands to it. Bouyed by this early wicket, Attaullah dispatched numbers 3 and 4 for Budleigh without troubling the scorers to pick up a hattrick and send his teammates into raptures. Budleigh 3-3

Not to be outdone S Bridgwater, bowling at the other end, bowling at last weeks double centurion, fresh in the promise from his skipper that if could restrict this dangerous batsman to single fingures there would b a jug in it for him... had him trapped LBW on the 1st ball of the 5th over. (12-4) So fast at the wickets fallen that the Budleigh middle order had to scrambled to get padded up!

Another wicket from Attuallah and Budleigh were struggling at 33-5. Not to be outdone, Sean had another screaming chance taken by Sid at 2nd slip, and the next balls a good take from Ahmad behind the stumps to reduce Budeligh to 34-7. The Budleigh captain resolutely defending Seand hattrick attempt and resisiting for several more overs before falling LBW to Sean in the 14th over. 41-8.

The youngsters at the crease batted very sensibly to see off Attaullah and Sean and picked up regular singles to tick the score along to 82 before attempting to play across the line to spinner S Roy and only managing to send the ball swirling high in the air to be taken in another good catch by the Exwick captain underneath.

8 balls later S Culy got his reward for some tight bowling by hitting the top of the stumps to wrap up the Budleigh innings for 90 all out and a big win for Exwick.

A fantastic team performance, brilliant work in the field from everyone, excellent bowling from Sean and Attaulah and constant pressure being build on the Budleigh batters. Man of the Match has to go to Attaullah for his hattrick and final figures of 8-2-4-16.

What a game! Hugh thanks the P Walker Snr and the Budleigh umpire. It was an absolute pleasure to have 2 umpires this week and both were excellent!

Exwick Team News!

1st XI side to face table topping Devon Medics and Cranbrook at home this afternoon.

After a good win on the road at Budleigh last week Exwick 1st XI are looking to cause an upset with the league high-flyers Devon Medics.

The final "League" game for this very special group last night saw Budleigh visit Exwick. The visitors won the toss and put Exwick in to bat.

Exwick batted well reaching 103 for the loss of just 3 wickets (Net Score 288) with some fantastic shots and outstanding running between the wickets.

As a bowling strong side we knew that this was a total we could defend and when Mia sent the bails flying on the 6th ball of the innings we knew we were in for a good evening.

Wickets fell regularly with the bowlers hitting the stumps, some outstanding fielding and no less than 6 run outs! 3 direct hits from Alex, one from Jesse and one from Jonah as well as one very good take from Matthew behind the stumps to whip the bails off to end the Budleigh innings on 99 having lost 16 wickets (Net Score 219)

As the culmination of a season of hard work and determination from this group playing their first summer of hard ball, this game showed what an amazing team of cricketers they are. From their spirit in the field, the teamwork and camaraderie, supporting each other and getting better and better every week the future of Exwick Cricket is not just bright it is nothing short of extraordinary.

The Devon Disability Pathway are looking for players to join the Pan Disability Squad for matchday opportunities this summer!

All players aged 12 and above with various impairments, including those who are deaf, have learning disabilities or have physical disabilities, are welcome!
