What will I be wearing on my 630 mile South West Coast Path walk?
Last time I did this walk I was lucky to discover a pair of Berghaus walking shoes that worked extremely well for me. These have now done around 1,000 miles of walking and although tatty they are still waterproof! So I have purchased an identical pair for my walk which I will break in of course. Also on my feet will be Marino wool walking socks.
I will wear lightweight walking trousers which will be tucked into my socks, which although looks ridiculous it gives some protection from ticks, although ticks do not bother me there is a very slight risk of catching Lyme Disease which I would not want. The trousers also have a handy side pocket with a flap for my phone so I can easily take lots of photos.
As the walk is in summer the temperature could vary between chilly nights camping to baking heat in August sun, so the answer is layers that can be added or removed. The first layer is a lightweight long sleeved ( sunburn) Marino Wool base layer which gives the all important wicking action which will help keep me cool, then a cotton shirt, a microfibre fleece if needed, then a lightweight waterproof walking jacket, if needed.
On my head is the vital wide brimmed sun hat.
I also have a lightweight ordinary shirt and shorts to wear to the pub in the evening after a shower at the various campsites so I won’t be smelly! Many campsites have a washing machine or hand wash facilities to keep my daytime kit fresh.
