The young person who gives you one-word answers isn’t being rude.
She’s deciding whether you’re safe.
She’s done this before.
She’s sat across from adults who asked questions
and then used the answers against her.
Or told her parents.
Or made it into a lesson.
Or said “I understand” in a way that proved they didn’t.
So she waits.
She tests.
She gives you nothing until you’ve earned something.
The practitioners who get through to young people
understand that trust is not assumed.
It is built, quietly, over time.
And there are specific skills that make it happen faster.
How do you build trust with a young person who has decided adults aren’t worth it?
