As a family we have supplemented vitamin D for many years now...this is thoughtful reading
Over 300 Professors and Doctors Call For Increased Vitamin D Use To Combat COVID-19.
As the evidence grows for the importance of vitamin D for COVID-19 prevention professors, doctors and scientists have collectively written to Governments and medical authorities to encourage recommending its use for prevention. The letter, which is available at https://vitamindforall.org/letter.html also shows what they, the experts, take themselves and recommend. Collectively, they recommend between 2,000 and 4,000iu a day, based on the evidence. I take 3,000iu you day.
What you need depends on your blood levels. Their recommendation is eat and supplement whatever you need to achieve 25(OH)D serum levels over 75nmol/L ((30ng/ml), which is a widely endorsed minimum with evidence of reduced COVID-19 risk. In the UK a level below above 50nmol/l is considered adequate, but this is not enough to reduce your risk significantly. Sun exposure is a major source of vitamin D so if you live far from the Equator, especially in winter, you are going to need a lot more.
In a nutshell, they say that higher vitamin D blood levels are associated with lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Higher D levels are also associated with lower risk of a severe case (hospitalization, ICU, or death). Intervention studies (including RCTs) indicate that vitamin D can be a very effective treatment. Many papers reveal several biological mechanisms by which vitamin D influences COVID-19. Causal inference modelling, the intervention studies & the biological mechanisms indicate that vitamin D’s influence on COVID-19 is very likely causal, not just correlation.
Along with vitamin C, I would recommend everyone to take vitamin D to help prevent covid and minimise duration and severity of infection. That’s what vitamin D experts and medics all over the world are saying.
