Something I get asked a lot is what makes Pilates different from other exercise methods.

One of many reasons is that most traditional exercise β€” think squats, deadlifts, running, cycling β€” works predominantly in one plane of movement. Forward and back. But our body is actually designed to move in three different planes of motion, forward and back, yes, but also sideways or twisting.

Pilates trains across all three planes of movement in every class, which means the muscles that support everyday life, like picking something up, twisting, reaching, and bending, get trained too.

The result is more functional strength, better posture, enhanced movement patterns and a body that holds up well in real life.

Our secret weapon to anti-ageing? It's not a cream or a supplement.

Joseph Pilates said it best, "If your spine is inflexible at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young."

The way your body moves is one of the truest reflections of how old you actually feel, not the number on your birthday cake. And the best part is it's something you can change.

Keeping your spine mobile, your muscles strong, and your body moving is our secret anti-ageing recipe.

Whatever age you're starting from, you're not too late. 🀍

Breda, thank you so much for this. 🀍

Pilates is serious work. Your body is doing a lot even when it doesn't look like it from the outside. But that doesn't mean the hour has to feel serious the whole time; there is always time for a laugh.

If your posture needs attention, and let's be honest, most of us do, the Spine Corrector is your magic weapon.

The Spine Corrector has been getting a lot of love in the studio lately, which makes complete sense. Most of us are spending hours hunched over screens, and this piece of apparatus is basically the antidote to that.

What it does is simple but quite clever. The arc shape gives your spine something to respond to; it supports the natural curves of your back so each segment can move, mobilising the joints, rather than the whole thing just hinging from one place.

It also opens up the mid- and upper back, which is the bit that gets most stuck from sitting and tight from stress. It can even assist with your breathing, which can become restricted from a hunched position.

So if you're at a laptop most of the day; this is your sign to come and get on one. πŸ˜„

Bad posture? Pilates can help.

Most people think bad posture is just a habit, something you can fix by trying harder to sit up straight. But actually, it's a muscle problem, and until you address that, nothing really changes.

Here's what's actually going on inside: on one side of your body, you have muscles that have become short and tight, usually from sitting, repetitive movement or just the way you hold tension. On the other side, the opposing muscles have often become long and weak.

The two sides are out of balance, and your body ends up compensating, which is where slouching, aches and pains, and stiffness come from.

Pilates works by addressing both sides; it works on lengthening what's tight and strengthening what's weak. As well as training the deep stabilising muscles along your spine, core and pelvis that most other exercises never reach.

Over time, your body will start to find its natural alignment again, and your posture will improve.

Have you seen one of these before?

This is the Spinefitter, a piece of equipment I use in some of my Reformer Pilates classes to help improve spinal mobility, release tension and increase body awareness.

It might look a little unusual, but my clients absolutely love it!

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is introducing different equipment and movement experiences to help people move and feel better.

Something new is coming to FC Pilates, and I am really excited about this one.

Reformer Strong launches Thursday, 11th June, 9am!

I designed this class for the people who love reformer Pilates but who also want to add some strength training to their routine. Heavier springs, heavier weights, slower tempos. Less complicated choreography so you can put all of your focus into lifting well, perfecting form and working hard.

These classes combine the resistance of the reformer with traditional strength training inspired exercises to challenge the entire body, giving you the best of both worlds.

We'll be working with a particular focus on glutes, legs, arms, back and core. Our small class size means plenty of attention to technique and form. So everyone can feel supported.

Thursdays 9am from 11th June.

Lotti, this means so much β€” thank you. 🀍

I keep my classes small so I can see you. All of you. To focus on form, give the right cues and be mindful of individual injuries or goals. That way I can make the class tailored to the people in it, no generic lesson plans here!

Plus, the small classes mean that there is community spirit ( and collective groans).

Something I get asked a lot by women over 40 β€” what should I actually be doing for my body?

The answer is two things: Strength training and Pilates. And ideally both.

As our hormones shift, our bodies need something different. Less flogging ourselves through high intensity and more building something that's going to last.

Lifting weights builds and maintains muscle mass, which matters more than ever after 40. More muscle means better body composition, more energy, and a boost for your metabolism. And reformer Pilates builds the deep stability, core strength, mobility and pelvic floor health that becomes more important as we get (a little) older. They're a perfect pair.

This is why we incorporate weights and resistance work into each class at FC Pilates.

Come and train smarter. 🀍
