Dan Clayton’s comeback tour has reached its glorious conclusion.

After being demoted to No. 8 last week, Dan responded in the only proper fashion: by producing a batting display good enough to earn Player of the Match.

The captain, who may or may not now be reviewing certain past decisions, was last seen looking appropriately sheepish.

From No. 8 to top billing. Cricket can be a wonderful game.

After last week’s memorable effort, there was naturally some discussion around the Modbury batting order.

Dan Clayton, demoted to number eight and given the simple instruction to “get on with it”, responded with a first-ball prod so mysterious that cricket historians may spend years trying to classify it.

The stumps, sadly, reached their conclusion rather sooner.

Bowled first ball, Dan wasted no time in identifying the true culprit: the captain.

This week, Modbury head to Yealm CC looking to bounce back, score a few more runs than excuses, and discover whether Dan has earned promotion, demotion, or full witness protection within the batting order.

Modbury beat Cornwood 5th XI by 39 runs on a glorious Sunday afternoon — and the events were so momentous they required two separate historical accounts.

The Solstice, the Scythe, and the Shattering of Innocence

Modbury CC marked the Summer Solstice in the traditional fashion: by travelling to Holbeton, enduring thick yellow squash, suspiciously warm egg mayo, peacocks at the gate, and eventually emerging with a 30-run victory.

Modbury posted 126/4 from 30 overs before restricting Holbeton to 96/8, thanks to some stout work in the field, a few moments of theatrical collapse, and the mysterious powers of James “El Slappo” Sloman.

El Slappo, recently unveiled as a Mexican magician of some repute, produced figures of 4 wickets for 5 runs and was duly awarded Man of the Match — or, more properly, Magician of the Match.

There was also a god-like catch, an aggrieved 13 not out, a Bolshoi pirouette, and Ben Lane doing unspeakable things to youthful optimism.

One does not feel oneself to be an especially thin-skinned chap. Indeed, when at her leisure, there is nothing the good Mrs Williams enjoys more than finding fault with her lesser half. One builds character and resilience from this sort of thing, much as oak is strengthened by the prevailing wind.

A hearty round of applause for this week’s Modbury CC award winners.

Player of the Day goes to Callum “The Viking” Lee-Oldfield, whose efforts in the middle were exactly the sort of stout-hearted business the occasion demanded.

Dish of the Day goes to Paul Romney’s sausage rolls, which strode confidently to the crease and were, by all accounts, dispatched with considerable enthusiasm.

Heroics on the field, heroics at the tea table. Just as village cricket intended.

Modbury CC are back at Fawns Close this Sunday as we welcome Ugborough CC for a 2pm start.

The forecast is for cricket, conversation, and possibly the sort of tea table that causes people to reconsider the meaning of lunch.

Congratulations to Daniel Clayton, our Player of the Day against Harberton CC.

In fading light, with wickets falling and the chase becoming a rather uphill business, Dan dug in admirably and brought some much-needed calm to proceedings.

A determined innings, a steady head, and a thoroughly deserved nod. 🏏
