The Invisible Work of a Tots Tennis Coach!

The smiles, laughter and ā€˜high fives’ are what everyone sees.

What they don’t see is the planning, preparation, patience, encouragement, problem-solving, the positive energy and adaptability which go on behind the scenes.

Coaching young children is about so much more than tennis, it’s about building confidence, creating positive experiences and helping every child feel like they belong.

With the support of fantastic parents on court, every child wins!

Know your young players as people!

Retention of young tennis players goes beyond creating a safe learning environment. One of the most overlooked factors is getting to know your players as a person and not just as a young tennis player.

For many children, the question isn’t just about improving their tennis but do I feel that I belong here. Youngsters often return because of the connection they feel with their coach and the environment as much as the sport itself.

A few simple coaching habits can make such a difference:

1) Learn and use names quickly
2) Remember small details such as hobbies, school events, favourite teams, or even pets
3) Take 30 seconds before or after sessions for genuine conversation
4) Notice changes in mood or their behaviour
5) Praise effort, kindness and resilience and not just forehands and results
6) Create rituals that build belonging and identity such as a ā€˜High 5s’ between players as well as coaches at the end of every class.

Little things such as ā€œstill supporting Arsenal?ā€ or ā€œyou were a great teammate today,ā€ go a long way. These may seem minor to us as coaches, but to a child it means my coach remembers me.

Here’s a little challenge for you for your coaching sessions this week. Try learning two non tennis facts about every player and intentionally bring one up in a later session.

Young players who feel seen are more likely to feel connected. Young players who feel connected are more likely to stay.

Retention isn’t only about developing better tennis players, it’s about creating a learning environment where youngsters want to come back week after week.

Player first, tennis second šŸ’ÆšŸŽ¾

When working with younger players, we sometimes focus heavily on technique, tactics, and results.

But before all of that, every youngster needs something much more important and that is to feel safe.

They need to feel safe to make mistakes, to ask questions and safe to grow.

Confidence doesn’t just appear, it’s built over time through trust, encouragement and creating a learning environment where players feel valued.

A young player who feels secure and supported will take more risks, learn faster and believe in themselves. This lasts longer than any forehand or serve we teach them.

As coaches, we are not just developing young players, we are shaping young people of the future. If we get this right, the tennis will follow.

What are your thoughts on the role coaches play in building confidence in young players? ā¬‡ļø

Building the foundations from Blue šŸ”µšŸŽ¾

Player development Is NOT linear and thats why blue tennis matters.

One important reflection from my recent ā€œBlue is the New Redā€ post is that player development is not a straight line journey.

Children do not simply progress smoothly from:

šŸ”µ Blue āž”ļøšŸ”“ Red āž”ļøšŸŸ  Orange āž”ļøšŸŸ¢ Green āž”ļøšŸŸ”Yellow

Every experienced coach knows development comes with:

* Peaks and troughs
* Loss in confidence
* Growth spurts
* Plateaus
* Regression and progression
* Emotional and physical changes

It’s important to remember that no two players develop the same way. The intention behind the pyramid was never to suggest a perfectly linear pathway.

The real message was to recognise that early years experiences create stronger long term foundations. Blue tennis isn’t about pushing children through stages earlier.

It’s about:

1) Movement skills
2) Hand eye coordination
3) Confidence
4) Making friends
5) Enjoyment
6) A lifelong love of the game

These foundations help support young players through the ā€˜ups and downs’ that come later in their tennis journey.

Development is messy, progress isn’t always visible, but the foundations still matter. That’s why the early years deserve far more attention than they currently receive in tennis.

Blue isn’t just where it starts, it’s what everything is built on.

Why Head Coaches Must Take Tots Tennis Seriously!

I want to see blue as the new red.

For me, the future of our sport isn’t being shaped at 8 years old, it’s being shaped earlier at 2-4 years old.

Speaking to some head coaches they are focused on performance, progression, and sustainability. With this in mind, I feel the conversation around tots tennis needs to shift. This isn’t about adding another junior session but building the foundations that everything else depends on.

Early years tennis directly impacts:

šŸŽ¾ Player quality so we see better movers and better learners.
šŸŽ¾ Retention of players - children who enjoy the sport will continue to play.
šŸŽ¾ A junior programme with stronger Red Ball groups.
šŸŽ¾ Club growth - engaged families from day one.

We need to educate head coaches that their is a link between early movement skills and long-term performance and let them see high quality tots sessions in action.

If we get this right, we don’t just run better sessions but we will see better young players, better programmes and stronger clubs.

It’s time to stop seeing tots tennis as an option but as an essential part of a club programme. Let’s build a programme with better foundations.

The question isn’t should we invest in early years tennis but can we afford not to?

He wouldn’t let go of his parent’s hand!

Today I had a youngster who couldn’t wait to come to his first tennis class. Yet when it came to step on court, he wouldn’t let go of his parent’s hand hiding behind them on the sidelines.

Twenty minutes later he was smiling, running between hoops, throwing and catching and even happy to help demonstrate with his racket.

This is why tots tennis matters. At this age, it’s not about perfect technique; it’s about confidence, movement, and feeling comfortable in a new environment.

Sometimes the biggest wins aren’t hitting forehands, it’s about the moments a child feels brave enough to try.

Who can relate to a youngster like this in your tennis classes? ā¬‡ļø

By the time most children pick up a racket, their first sporting experiences are already shaping their confidence, coordination, and a love for the game.

That’s why I focus on tots tennis. I create fun, movement-based sessions that build:

✨ Coordination
✨ Confidence
✨ A love for tennis

I am currently running sessions for my business Topspin Monkeys as well as classes at and at the All England Lawn Tennis Club Community Grounds in Raynes Park.

I’m on a mission to help clubs create amazing early-years programmes.

Running saved me once, now it inspires me every day. ✨

Back in 2011, when I was diagnosed with burn-out syndrome and running was my medicine. It helped me through one of the toughest chapters of my life. šŸƒā€ā™‚ļøšŸ’Ø

Fast forward to today and I’m so proud to be part of the academy ; a team that truly lives by the values of sound mind, sound body. šŸ§˜ā€ā™‚ļøšŸŽ¾

When your personal values align with the work you do, magic can happen. I’m so grateful for this journey and the incredible people I get to work alongside.

Teach mini tennis we do, build confidence we must.

I watched Star Wars over the Easter weekend and it got me thinking about my role as a tennis coach for 2–4 year olds.

A Jedi Master teaches younglings the ways of the force.

As a coach, I feel like I’m doing something similar; not just teaching lightsabers, but teaching life skills.

Through tennis, these little players learn:

✨ Confidence
✨ Coordination
✨ Resilience
✨ Focus
✨ The courage to try again

At this age it’s not about perfect technique, it’s about building the foundations that will help them for life.

Every Jedi starts as a youngling, every mini tennis player starts with their first swing.

May the force be with you on the courts!
