Ely Swimming Club

Ely Swimming Club City of Ely Amateur Swimming Club An open-air swimming pool was built on Angel Drove (now the Ford garage) in around 1958.

The City of Ely Swimming Club was formed in 1923, when all swimming events, training and home competitions took place in the River Ouse near the Cutter Inn. Most club nights (summer only of course!) were taken up with Inter Club matches. There was very little tuition, you just got in and swam as fast as you could. Club championships were held annually, when cups and certificates were awarded. In A

ugust each year, the 'Swim Through Ely' was held with competitors from all over Cambridgeshire swimming from Newmarket Railway Bridge to Annesdale Quay. This had to be abandoned when the river became too polluted. In 1977, Ely swimming club began winter training in St. Ives, which improved standards immensely. The Paradise Pool was opened in 1981 and swimmers could then train all
year round in Ely.

Hats off to our Masters

On Saturday 16th May our Masters squad took a team of 5 swimmers to the South East London Regional Masters Competition at the London Aquatic Centre at the Olympic Park and true Olympians they turned out to be with all swimmers either medalling or bringing home a PB or a new club record.

Congratulations go to all of them with Mark Banwell winning 3 individual Gold and 1 individual Silver medal plus 3 PB’s and 1 Team Gold and 1Team Silver. Hannah Kershaw with 3 individual Gold and 3 individual Silver medals plus 3 PB’s and 1 Team Gold and 1 Team Silver. Hannah also produced 3 new Club Records which is a fantastic achievement at a single day meet. Sarah Smith coming away with 1 individual Gold and 2 individual Silver medals plus 1 PB and 1Team Gold and 1 Team Silver. Sarah also achieving 1 new Club Record. Matthew Chadwick winning 1 Team Gold 2 Individual Silvers and a new PB too. Not to be outdone and not forgetting Martyn Fresher with a winning 1Team Gold and 1 Team Silver plus an individual Bronze medal.

Incredibly we witnessed them back in the pool on Sunday at our Club Championships, where once again they pulled off some great performances and they really are a shining example to our junior swimmers.
I am sure all our Masters will agree with me that part of the winning formula has come from the hard work and dedication Mark Banwell has put into the squad setting the sessions and keeping the tempo upbeat throughout the season
Well done

Swimming back in full swing at St ives Newmarket

Last week our Masters were in action at the Newmarket Masters Meet coming 6th in a field of 43 teams and Lauren Grice dependable as ever being top female swimmer. This Saturday the youngsters in our JFL Team competed bravely at St Ives against strong opposition from Wisbech, West Norfolk and St Ives in the JFL A Final coming 4th with some fine swims from the team. Our JFL swimmers should be congratulated for reaching the A Final for the first time in some years. Well done.

On Sunday 51 swimmers travelled to Newmarket to compete in the sprint meet, swimming against teams from Newmarket Waveney Deben, Huntingdon and Biggleswade. There were fabulous performances all round and we came away as top club and Alex Pashley was top boy. We achieved 84 PB's and yes that boy again Alex Pashley took 2 more club records. Again I thank all swimmers who competed this weekend for their effort and behaving so well in difficult surroundings . Congratulations to you all.

Masters on the World Stage

Over the weekend Matthew Chadwick, one of our Masters swimmers, swam in the World Open Water Championships 3km in Singapore in the 30 to 34 year old category where he finished 10th against the best open water swimmers in the world. A fantastic achievement by Matt whilst swimming under the City of Ely colours . At the British Open Water Championships in Sheffield the unstoppable Phil Trelford came 4th in the 5km event in his age category and again we applaud his hard work in training and another superb result.

Last Saturday we really enjoyed hosting JFL Round 4 ‘at home’ in The Hive. Great competition from the visitors from Wisbech, Mildenhall and West Norfolk Swimming Club. The squadron relay to finish was especially exciting with almost nothing between Ely and the very competitive West Norfolk team at the end.
The Barracudas narrowly claimed overall victory on the night by 138 points to 135 for West Norfolk, securing a place at the ‘A’ final in September.
The team achieved an outstanding 22 PBs from 44 events and breaking cut off times in 10, a very successful outcome as well as a great spectacle.

Many thanks to all the swimmers and their parents, all the officials and coaches for their continued commitment and to our Executive and committee who put on the event. Thanks also to the Better team at The Hive for making everything happen and a special thank you to the staff at McDonalds at Ely Leisure Village for feeding our winning swim team afterwards, a well deserved reward!

Tonight our swimmers are in action again this time at the Dave Robinson Memorial Gala in Mildenhall. Good luck team!
