Soham Badminton Club

Local badminton club for those seeking competitive matches or simply to improve their game in a friendly environment.

Soham Badminton Club has been established for many years and is a great way for local players to come along, meet new people and improve their games. Club nights are held from September through to May at the Ross Peers Sports Centre in Soham every Thursday night between 8pm and 10pm. For those seeking competitive matches, we have teams in the Newmarket Badminton Federation League, whilst for all p

layers our club nights provide a chance to play and socialise with the other members. We are always looking for new members, so why not come along, meet the other players and give it a go. The club runs on an annual subscription basis but non-members can attend and pay a guest fee for up to 3 sessions during the season before having to commit to joining.

End of Season Competition

It may have been the last club night of the season, but that gave us one last chance for a competition to round off the year.

A more ad-hoc method was adopted for the competition this time, with games selected from the pegboard as on a normal club night. As always, the mere mention of a competition and the thought of winning a prize inspired everyone to produce their best badminton, resulting in some really closely contested games.

After adding up the scores and applying handicaps, the prizes for best performances on the night went to Sarah and Andrew - congratulations to you both. Hopefully the chocolate prizes hadn't melted too much!

Easter Competition
A club tournament is always a good way to add some competitive games and our Easter tournament proved as popular as ever. With some delicious chocolate bunnies up for grabs, everyone was hopping around the court trying to secure enough points to take home the prizes.
With 4 teams each comprising 4 players the competition was fierce and after adding up the scores, Deb, Gillian, Andreas and Steve found themselves in top spot. That of course didn't mean much as the handicaps still had to be applied, and after making the necessary adjustments they found themselves demoted to runners-up position having been overtaken by Liz E, Liz H, Ken & Tony.
Overall a good fun competition thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.🏸🏸

The end of another year rounded off with the annual competition, and celebratory drinks and nibbles.

Thanks to everyone for playing in such a great spirit and bearing with us as we had to shuffle things a little to keep things flowing. Hopefully Emma's injury is not too bad and the RAC have come to Paul's rescue so that he could eventually make his way home.

Another closely contested event saw Team Dancer ease their way to the top of the leaderboard, only to see Cupid and then Prancer gallop past them to take the top 2 spots with the benefit of some generous bonus points. Well played to the Prancers who ended ahead on 177 points compared to Cupids on 172.

Adrian, Tony & Emma (with the help of some substitutions) are the proud victors as the Prancers, with Veronica, Heather and Alistair in runners up as the Cupids.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and look forward to seeing you all back in 2026.

Christmas Tournament
Many thanks to our members for coming along last night to take part in our annual pre-Christmas competition.

There were many close matches and a few un-expected results, but ultimately everyone had a great time and after applying bonus points Team 4 comprising Heather, Robin, Tony and Alain came out as winners, narrowly pushing Team 3 (Sarah, Deb, Calvin and Peter) into second place.

Thanks to all those players who added to the Christmas spirit by coming along in festive costumes. James took the prize for best costume with Sarah & Liz not far behind and many others adorned with antlers and tinsel to add to the fun.

Happy Christmas to all our current and prospective members.

We are always looking for new members, so if anyone fancies putting 'playing badminton' on their list of New Years' Resolutions, please get an touch and come and join us in 2025.

Soham Badmington Club is a friendly mixed gender group of players, who enjoy the sport.

We play at the Ross Peers sports centre. Club night is on a Thursday night from 8.00 to 10.00 pm September to May.

We are looking for new members to join our friendly club.

Easter Tournament Results
Thank you to the 18 players who entered the team competition in pursuit of earning a place on the coveted Soham Badminton Club Honours Board (or more likely just trying to win a chocolate rabbit!).

Being split into 6 teams of 3 players, a frantic night of badminton commenced and it was great to see how the added motivation raised everybody's games.

Once the the dust had settled, the scores calculated and the allocated bonus points added, only 21 points separated all 6 teams with the lowest scoring 148 and the highest 169. On this occasion the title (and the large chocolate rabbits) go to Sarah, Robin and Tony, with Liz (E), Jakub and Adam just 4 points behind (and having to settle for smaller chocolate rabbits).

Thanks again to all who played and those who helped to organise and run the event.

Soham badminton club rounded off 2023 with a Christmas team tournament. With 4 teams competing to win the coveted Christmas gnomes, everybody raised their games to strive for the top spot and walk away with the prize.
After some hard fought games it was Heather, Adrian, James and Peter who found themselves leading the competition, and after adding bonus points they secured first place and the gnomes, with Gillian, Roha, Tony and Sam ending as runners up.
Thanks to everyone taking part and playing making it an enjoyable evening.

Match Report - Soham v’s Impington

New members, Calvin Holland James Brown enjoyed an excellent win, in their pairing against Impington. In only their first outing for Soham’s Men’s Team, Calvin and James worked tremendously hard to win their match.

The overall match score of 5-1, in favour of Impington, did not reflect how close most matches were, with Soham loosing numerous sets 21-19.

Andreas Elia, team captain said ‘It’s great to see new members playing in matches. We deserved a few more match wins, but Impington played extremely well. I am sure that as pairings get used to playing together, the match score will reflect this. Overall an excellent match’.

Match Report - Soham v’s Burwell

In a very competitive and well fought match, Soham’s mixed Badminton Team managed a 5-4 win against Burwell on Monday 06 November.

Sarah Cooper and Andreas Elia played exceptionally well, securing all three of their matches.

Tony & Liz Everitt as well as Al Bonadei & Gillian Kendrick secured 1 match each, in their respective pairings.

Tony, team captain, said ‘It was a really great match, competitively played by all our team. Even better that we secured a great win’.
