Yes!

The late, great western performance horseman, Les Vogt, once said something that really resonated with me. Quick as a wink, I raced to rustle up a pen and piece of paper, so that this gem would soak in and not be forgotten.

ā€œPolish your horse’s self-esteem!ā€ he said, during a short little reel, as he spoke about goals in his own horsemanship. He went on to talk about something else but by then, I’d come to a full stop.

Right there. That’s it, right there. No matter my age, or discipline, or dreams, or horse power, or opportunities, I want my horses to feel better about themselves when they're around me. No matter what I’m teaching them, or struggling with, or how we are perceived by other people, let me build their courage, their comfort and their sense of peace. Let me build their minds and bodies and not just be another who chips it all away.

Let us be our very best selves, together.

It’s such a great phrase because I suspect that it may be the golden nugget within all positive relationships… and not just the one between me and my horse.

SAYING GRACE...

I want to thank you for being here.

Thank you for encouraging me to keep trying, learning and striving, when so many of the people my age are starting to slow down. I now know that I will never see enough sunrises to master this thing called horsemanship. While this saddens me, it also inspires me to get cracking, no matter what. For what are we waiting for?!

ā€˜Seeking balance’ has become something of a mantra in all that I do with my horses.

Balancing—for it is a verb requiring constant effort—all these new ideas before us with all the old methodology, finding space for all our differing beliefs and disciplines. Let’s not step more heavily into one stirrup, than the other.

Let’s spend a lifetime encouraging proper movement and posture from our horses, so that our dreams do not come at their expense. Let’s seek relationship as we explore performance. Let’s celebrate all the opportunities that being with our horses present.

Let's continue to learn. Let’s light the way for those around us, by being open to lifelong betterment. By greeting each new day with wonder and gratitude.

Let’s welcome the newcomers to our community, all the while remembering those wise voices from our past. Let’s appreciate all the endless chances for growth that knowing horses has always allowed us.

Let’s give thanks for having been bestowed the lifelong gift of loving horses…

For this makes us among the luckiest people in the world.
