We were thrilled to be given a Pride of Formartine Award at the recent council meeting in Ellon.

it recognises the work done by the Wheel Park Group to build the wheel park, help revitalise Gordon Park and its ongoing operation for everyone in the community.

It also recognises the work done by Ythan Cycle Club over the years diversifying into being a real community club and the work done by all the volunteers as well who turn out week after week, putting on sessions for disability riders, youth riders, learn to ride sessions, women’s only sessions, pump track racing, confidence building sessions and so much more. Many of these community sessions would have been possible without a facility such as the wheel park.

It was a pleasure for our Formartine Area Committee to present a Pride of Formartine Award in recognition of outstanding community achievement yesterday.

Under the Formartine Recognition Scheme, councillors were delighted to welcome Colin Allanach, Ali Hull-Bailey and Alan Smith, representing the Ythan Cycle Club, whose dedication and vision have been instrumental in the success of the Ellon Wheeled Park Project.

From the outset, Colin and the team have shown exceptional commitment, engaging with the community, carefully planning the development, leading fundraising efforts, overseeing construction and continuing to ensure the park remains well maintained, inclusive and accessible for everyone.

The range of activities now available, from all-abilities sessions to women-only sessions and balance bike opportunities for younger riders, highlights their ongoing passion for creating a welcoming environment for everyone.

Their hard work has not gone unnoticed, with Ythan Cycle Club being named Scottish Cycling’s Club of the Year in 2025 – an outstanding achievement and a testament to their impact.

The wheeled park is now a fantastic asset for Ellon and the wider Formartine area, enhancing local facilities and bringing people together.

We extend our sincere congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in making this project such a success.

One of the most common questions we get asked the park is “how do you fund the park?” Ellon Wheel Park Group is a registered charity run by volunteers SCIO SC052816. To run the park costs around £9,000 - £10,000 per year and those costs are for; 3rd party liability insurance, park safety inspections, grass cutting, general maintenance, auditing of yearly accounts etc.

Most of the income for the park comes from regular hires by clubs, schools and other organisations and without these the park couldn’t remain open to be free to use for the rest of the community all other times. We also apply for grant funding to help develop the park and are working towards the big funds required for phase 2, the skatepark zone. Some other parks use a business model where they have the area all fenced off and each person using it has to pay, we wanted the park to be free to use for the community, and so we decided not to adopt that business model, but that does mean we sometimes have to close the park off for private hires occasionally.

We have regular hires on Saturday mornings, Wednesday mornings and Tuesday evenings and its mostly the circuit that is hired for these times. Occasionally the pump track is also hired out, for example on some Friday evenings for the Friday Night Fury pump track time trials.

Anyone can book the facility but the hirer must have their own insurance, supervision and risk assessment for their activity. So hires are usually made by groups such as scouts, cycle club triathlon club, school groups etc.

We publish hires and events on the wheelpark website and sometimes publish on local social media:
https://www.ellonwheelpark.co.uk/what-s-on-and-booking

If there is a private hire on, then please respect the fact that they are paying for it so that you can use it for free. Keep clear if there is a hire on and come back when it is free. Please also respect the groups using the park during these times, they are volunteers, they have their own insurances and risk assessments to adhere to, and any abuse will not be tolerated.

There is a Friday Night Fury time trial on the pump track this Friday and so the pump track will be closed to general public from 6pm till 7.30pm.

03/06/2026

This Saturday the Ellon Car Race is on. The circuit ares will be closed all day due to set up/ racing and tidy up,

The pump track will be open until 2pm snd will open again at 3.45 pm.

Sorry for the disruption but have a great day at the gala and the pedal car race.
