I've not posted in a very long time due to illness, but classes and things have been ticking over in the background, along with a steep learning curve about managing my energy levels!

This pic here is a tensegrity icosahedron that I put together. Biotensegrity is one such thing that has been occupying some of my out of class time.

I have also made some updates to my website, most notably 1-1s in person are back! www.cowanpilates.com

I often refer to Pilates as a mindbody activity or as mindful movement. Looking at the guiding principles of Pilates*, its not hard to see why this might be:

❇️ Breath - we cannot live without breathing, we depend on it. In Pilates we pay particular attention to how we breathe and how we use breath to move.

❇️ Centering - drawing your attention to and using your core ('powerhouse') when you move. Moving from and with your centre.

❇️ Concentration - It is not a mindless activity - every movement matters, every time. We pay close attention to the details of movement every time we do it. I often think of this as bringing the mind into the body.

❇️ Control - Pilates was originally called Contrology, because we are learning and executing controlled movements. In fact, we are training the body to respond to the instructions of our minds and developing our self awareness. There are many benefits of learning controlled movements, such as reduced risk of injury.

❇️ Coordination* - our bodies have many parts and in order to move effectively as a whole it requires connection and coordination between all of the parts. This includes the coordinating of breath, core and movement as well as coordination between the body parts/limbs.

❇️ Flow - is supported by effective coordination. Movements are designed to be smooth and flowing - maybe the words natural/organic fit here too. This way, movements are safe and less likely to cause damage.

*Generally you will see Precision instead of Coordination as a principle, however I feel that precision is pretty well covered by principles of concentration and control and coordination is very important in addition.

When lockdown began I made an uneasy transition to online teaching. I was nervous about how to do it, how people would respond and how long it would be for. I recently made the decision to keep my classes online this year and I am so glad to have the support of all my clients as we move to course/term booking.

I have got to say, although anxious at first, I have really enjoyed teaching online. I know many people are eager to get back to the old way of doing it, but today I've been thinking alot about the benefits of online teaching in comparison to in person - because they do exist.

BENEFITS OF ONLINE CLASSES

+ being able to take part in your own home, alone - it has made classes accessible and more comfortable for people who get socially anxious, or don't feel confident in amongst a group of people.

+ no travel - you may not have been able to make a class before because of the time it takes to get there after finishing work - but especially if you are working at home you now can make that class or work flexibly around it.

+ classes can be recorded - if you miss a class for any reason, you can catch up at a better time using the recording.

+ you can log on from anywhere - if you go away for a break you can still join the class from wherever you are.

New Stretch classes - starting September 14th.

Mon and Tues mornings before Pilates class, Weds evenings after Pilates class.

Stretch classes are great for warming up before class, cooling down after class, preparing for your day ahead or for a relaxed evening, as well as increasing your flexibility and reducing stiffness. They are especially great if you know or feel like you need to stretch, but are not sure exactly what to do or how to stretch safely.

Classes will include a range of static and dynamic stretches will help you ease a little tension and stiffness out of your body, whilst focusing on your use of breath will help you to clear your mind, connect with your body and re-centre yourself.

Julie's approach to stretching takes influence from Pilates, yoga, dance and somatic movement. You will be guided through everything. Don't worry if you feel particularly stiff or tight, or have issues balancing - suitable support and adjustments will be provided where needed to make it possible for everyone to join in. Each body is different!

There are two types of stretch class available; Morning Stretch classes are a great way to start your day or prepare for class. These classes will start with warming up our bodies in preparation to stretch. Evening Stretch classes are a great way to fit in some deeper stretching after class and prepare you for winding down for the evening.

All stretch classes are online via Zoom and are 30 minutes long.
