Here's some f*ck ups from my 5 years of coaching and what they taught me.
1️⃣ Trying to program new workouts for my clients every session
When I first started I was terrified of my clients getting bored, so I was programming them new workouts every session.
This created three issues...
A) every time they came in the gym they felt like a beginner
B) Their results were sh*te because they had no measure of progression.
C) I gave myself sooooo much unnecessary extra programming work
Now my clients work in blocks of 4-6 weeks so they can actually progress their exercises, know what they're doing in the gym and get strong AF.
2️⃣ Programming fancy exercises to try to make things seem more individualised.
I've got one specific client in mind who was trying to build some strength to take into her running. Literally my 2nd client ever.
Week 2 of coaching i'm getting her i'm getting her doing a split squat with her front foot on a bosu ball "to build ankle stability" before i've even seen her do a f*cking goblet squat.
Idiot.
Now i'm a huge believer in mastering the basics. Learn to squat confidently. Learn to press without the bar wobbling all over the place. Learn to deadlift without curving like a shrimp. This is what 99% of people need. Not split squats on a bosu ball!
3️⃣ Not learning how to use every machine in the gym (even if I don't use them myself)
First week I moved to Craigleith. Trying to build up my reputation and my client base. Lady comes into the gym and basically announces she wants a PT and a brief show around the gym. So I show her round and we reach the glute bridge machine (one i'm all too familiar with these days), and she asked me to show her how to use it. My previous gym didn't have one of these so I blagged it.
She absolutely saw right through me.
Gave her my business card as she left and then saw her training with someone else a week later!
So yeah...young fresh-faced Ceri was a daftie, but I like to think i've learnt from these mistakes to ensure that today I get my clients the results their hard work deserves! 💪
