One of the quickest ways to make jiu-jitsu miserable is to put too much pressure on yourself.

You don’t have to win every round. You don’t have to avoid being tapped. And you definitely don’t have to train at 100% every time you step onto the mats.

Of course, take your training seriously. Think about your technique. Work on the things you want to improve. Ask questions. Drill with purpose.

But also… relax.

Do some lighter rounds. Let your training partner work. Try something you’re bad at. Get caught. Tap. Laugh about it. Try again.

When every roll stops being a test of whether you’re “good enough”, you start giving yourself room to actually learn.

And strangely enough, that’s often when the progress comes.

Train hard when it’s time to train hard.

But don’t forget to enjoy being on the mats. 🥋

Learning self-defence isn't only about knowing what to do if a stranger attacks you on the street.

Sometimes the person making you uncomfortable is someone you already know - a friend, colleague, date, partner or even someone you trust.

That’s why self-defence also means learning to recognise red flags, trust your instincts, set clear boundaries and know what to do when those boundaries aren't respected.

You are allowed to change your mind.
You are allowed to say no.
You are allowed to leave.
And it is never too late to set a boundary.

At Valor, we don't just teach physical techniques. We teach women and girls awareness, boundaries, confidence and practical skills to protect themselves when words are no longer enough.
