Here's a free thing we can ALL do to help against Covid-19.

SIMPLY BREATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE.

Did you know we expel 42% more moisture by breathing through the mouth? As the Covid-19 virus is mainly transmitted through expelled water droplets we can all massively reduce the spread by breathing through the nose.

In addition, when we breathe in through the nose we produce a gas in the respiratory epithelium called nitric oxide (no not the laughing gas!). Nitric oxide has been shown to successfully inhibit the replication cycle of corona viruses in the lungs, thereby this is the body's first line of defence against infection.

Happy to be back doing tai chi sessions for my friends in the care homes, albeit remotely. It's one of the few certainties in life that we will all age and our bodies will change, yet we still live in a society that puts an age cap on our usefulness. We should do all that we can to not judge each other based on age. The dichotomy is that we are told to cling onto youth while also working ourselves into the ground so that if we live long enough, we can one day retire. It's crazy. As we grow older the benefits of physical, mental and social stimulation become increasingly paramount. However many of the illnesses that we are told are 'just part of getting old' are not, they are choices. We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and to stay healthy through the choices we make every day. Want to do something for your children? Then don't assume that growing older is equal to becoming ill. Take action today, one day you will appreciate it.

Here's something that we can all do to fight infection. It's a really simple 30 min routine that requires nothing more than a bit of peace and quiet! However it's important that you try this once a day for the next 8 weeks. There's a new article on our website that explains how this works and why it is so important... check it!

Let us know how you get on.

There are two phases, if you cannot commit to 30 mins just focus on the first phase.

First Phase

Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed or distracted and make yourself comfortable, be that seated, kneeling, lying down etc.

Choose a repetitive task on which to focus. This could be breathing, a short poem, song, music playing, clock ticking, counting… whatever works for you.
Close your eyes and focus on the repetitive task.
Breathe deeply through your nose and relax.
When random thoughts come into your head bring your focus back to the task. Allow the mental chitter-chatter to quieten but do not become frustrated when thoughts pop in.
Aim for a duration of 12 - 15 minutes.

Second phase

When followed correctly the mind will now be in a receptive and relaxed state with a dominance of alpha waves. At this point stay relaxed and breathing deeply but shift your focus to something that makes you feel happy, relaxed and free from pain. This could be particular scenery, a holiday or happy memory, doing something you love or being in an imaginary place. Again, whatever makes you happy. Allow yourself to be in this place for a further 12 - 15 minutes, and then you are done… simples.

You probably already meditate without knowing it and more importantly, how essential it is for fighting infectious illness and disease. You can go full-unicorn and gnome into the rainbow realms but what we are discussing here is firmly supported by scientific research.
