Good morning, folks! I've been so naughty in the past months not posting anything about our club and what we had been up to... but here's a promise not to do it again! So today I've decided to start a series of useful illustrations, links, videos and FAQs, all giving you information about the "technical" and quirky bits and bops in aikido.

Let's start with a very, very FAQ:
Q: What clothes do I need to practice?
A: Comfortable loose clothes without hard zips or buttons. Ideally baggy trousers/trackies/leggings and a t-shirt/hoodie! The training occurs in bare feet with your pockets empty and all jewellery removed. Once you're all committed to practicing, we'll help you order a proper traditional aikido set of clothes, known as gi.
PS: nobody would send you home if your feet are freezing and you do not feel like taking your socks off, so don't worry!

What is Aikido?
The Japanese martial art of Aikido is a comprehensive system of throwing, joint-locking, striking and pinning techniques, coupled with training in traditional Japanese weapons such as the sword, staff and knife. Founded by Morihei Ueshiba (commonly called O-Sensei) early in the twentieth century, Aikido represents a potent distillation of centuries of Japanese martial knowledge. Ueshiba conceived of Aikido as not only a means of vanquishing a foe, but as a means of promoting the positive character of the ideal warrior and ultimately of transcending dualistic conflict. For O-Sensei, Aikido was a path of self-development. He believed that it could be a means for anyone, of any nation, to follow the same path. Aikido is shugyo: an intense physical and spiritual training to perfect human character and develop true wisdom.
