In light of the government guidance on Monday23rd around Covid-19 (Coronavirus), we have taken the difficult decision to postpone Edinburgh 24 until summer 2021.
This decision hasn't been taken lightly but due to the current government advice to stay indoors we feel like this is the correct and responsible course of action. Even after the period of lockdown we would expect some sensible restrictions on movement and the continuation of social distancing for a period of time.
Our community of racers, suppliers, staff and volunteers (and by extension their families) are incredibly important to us so we therefore feel that we have a duty to ensure your health and wellbeing. By postponing the event we also hope to reduce the impact on the emergency services and incredible NHS staff (some of whom work or volunteer part time for us).
Edinburgh 24's 24 hour Event Village doesn't allow us to practice social distancing with runners coming through the enclosed Event Village, in some cases, twice an hour and race crews, suppliers and staff/volunteers congregating in that area to cheer on runners for the duration of the event. There would understandably be areas of congestion at the start and finish of the race, camping area, car park and participant marquee. Whilst there are some steps that we could take to mitigate the risk for this event we're not able to reduce this to a satisfactory level.
We have updated our cancellation policy which can be accessed in the FAQs on the event page: https://www.breakingstrain.co.uk/edinburgh-24/ As this is an enforced change, we've tried to make our cancellation policy as flexible as possible:
1. In the first instance, all entrants will automatically be moved across to the new event in Summer 2021. By transferring to the new event you guarantee entry in 2021.
2. If the new date, when announced, is not suitable then participants can either transfer their place across to a replacement runner (arrange transfer of fees at a personal level) or ask for a 100% refund from BSE. This must be done within 30 days of the new event date being announced. The new event date will be announced in the autumn 2020.
3. Participants can request a 100% refund at the point of being notified of the 2020 event postponement. We understand that these are financially unstable times and people are in different financial situations.
4. Participants can request a credit note so their entry fee can be used against any of our activities for the next 18 months. eg. this can be used to enter other UK-based events or as part payment for one of our overseas treks. In this instance you will be removed from the race roster and a credit note applied to your account.
As a company (of one full time employee), we've been hit pretty hard by Covid-19 (like most small businesses/self-employed). In addition to having to cancel our own events, we've lost a couple of contracts for events where we were subcontracting at as they've also been cancelled and our sign ups to our overseas treks have understandably dried up. Ultimately though there are far bigger fish to fry than a race at the moment.
I'd like to thank you for your patience and understanding and thanks for supporting the event and Breaking Strain Events.
Any questions, give me a shout on [email protected]
Cheers
